Police Officer - Entry Level

Salary Monthly base pay ranges from $5,920 to $7,196 (DOQ) for candidates without certifications. For holders of a POST Intermediate Certification, pay ranges from $6,334 to $7,700. For holders of a POST Advanced Certification, pay ranges from $6,749 to $8,203. Base salary will increase 3% in July 2026. Benefits 5% specialty assignment pay and 7% FTO specialty assignment pay. Availability of a take‑home car while on duty. Uniform allowance of $1,000 per year. Medical coverage through a self‑funded Anthem Blue Cross plan. Dental and vision coverage by the City. Paid holidays: 12 fixed holidays plus 3 floating holidays. Paid bereavement leave up to 40 hours per immediate family death. Position Overview Under general supervision, the officer performs patrol, traffic enforcement, investigations, and community policing duties to protect life and property and enforce federal, state, and local laws. Responsibilities Patrol assigned area to ensure public safety, observe and report suspicious activity, and deter crime. Respond to emergency calls, disturbances, thefts, burglaries, vehicle accidents, domestic disputes, and other incidents. Provide information, directions, and assistance to the public; take reports and aid with complaints. Perform community policing duties: maintain a visible presence, speak at civic events, and recommend community partnerships. Control traffic situations, issue citations, assist motorists, and provide traffic control at incidents and special events. Makes arrests, serves warrants, and transports suspects as required. Secure crime scenes, interview suspects and witnesses, collect and preserve evidence, and conduct investigations. Coordinate and maintain case development with other agencies and provide testimony in court. Serve as liaison with schools to address juvenile and delinquent cases. Assist the City Attorney’s office in documenting and preparing cases. Provide emergency medical attention and call for additional medical assistance when necessary. Cooperate with other law‑enforcement agencies as dispatched. Prepare incident reports, logs, and maintain accurate records. Serve legal documents such as writs, warrants, and subpoenas. Conduct program or project areas such as crime prevention and field training. Maintain equipment and ensure proper use. Perform any additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Completion of the twelfth grade (12th) or equivalent. One year of experience interacting with the public. Two years of college coursework and/or volunteer law‑enforcement experience is desirable. Valid California Class C driver’s license with satisfactory record. Valid certificate of completion of the California POST Basic Training Academy. Current firearms qualification and maintenance of firearms. Ability to pass a detailed background investigation. Physical & Environmental Demands Work requires walking on uneven terrain, lifting, and frequent kneeling and climbing. Candidates must have good visual, hearing, and speech abilities to maintain firearms qualification and communicate with the public and radio. Employees work indoors and outdoors, subject to noise, temperature extremes, vibration, and hazards such as chemicals and mechanical equipment.
