The City of Janesville, Wisconsin, invites applications for the position of Police Officer. This is a full-time position with a salary of $50,255.90 annually. The Police Department is located at 100 North Jackson Street, Janesville, WI.
This position involves the enforcement of law and maintenance of order, protection of life and property, and prevention of crime. The role is physically and psychologically demanding, requiring the ability to uphold the law, conduct routine patrols, make arrests, respond to calls for service, and perform related duties.
Qualified applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Aged 18 or older.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by a minimum 40 college semester credits at time of hire (60 college semester credits for lateral transfer candidates at time of application) or Associate Degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice or related field.
- Meet the requirements of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards and Training Board.
- A valid, state-issued driver's license at time of hire.
- Must pass medical examination meeting minimum physical, hearing, and eyesight requirements.
- A United States citizen and have no felony criminal record.
- Must pass written and psychological examinations.
- Must pass a background investigation.
Skills and abilities required include excellent written and verbal communication, effective record-keeping, strong interpersonal and customer service skills, and the ability to represent the department professionally. The position also requires the ability to learn and apply modern police practices, understand and comply with laws and regulations, and perform duties with considerable judgment and initiative.
The job involves working in various conditions, including outside weather, near moving vehicles, and in high, precarious places. The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull objects up to 100 pounds, and perform physical exchanges with others. The position predominantly involves shift work, including 24/7 hours, and requires availability for on-call emergency notifications and response.
