The Voter Services and Access Associate is the relationship-driven, community-facing arm of Michigan United’s 2026 election protection program. While other roles build the backend operational infrastructure, this position focuses entirely on our people: the voters who need support understanding their rights, navigating documentation changes, returning their absentee ballots, resolving voting issues, and feeling welcomed and confident when they walk into a polling location. This is a high-volume, deeply rewarding role built for someone who loves being out in the community.

The 2026 cycle presents unique policy updates and changes that naturally create voter confusion and documentation anxiety. The Voter Services and Access Associate translates this complex policy landscape into accessible, clear help for our neighbors through multilingual educational materials, community-based case management, hotline support, and a non-partisan Ballot Chase Program to ensure every eligible vote is successfully counted.

This role also leads United Wednesdays —Michigan United’s signature weekly civic engagement anchor event—and nurtures the volunteer network dedicated to voter access. This is a highly active role that thrives on presence at community events, faith institutions, neighborhood block clubs, college campuses, and polling locations across our target areas.

Position Details and Responsibilities

1. Know Your Rights Campaign

The Know Your Rights campaign is our primary voter education tool for the 2026 cycle. The Associate takes the lead on organizing and executing this outreach.

• Campaign Launch: Roll out the educational campaign starting in June 2026, keeping the momentum going through Election Day.
• Multilingual Design: Help develop plain-language voting guides in English, Arabic, Spanish, Bengali, Somali, and other languages based on community needs.
• Material Quality: Partner with the Election Legal Volunteer Corps and our internal Communications team to ensure all public-facing materials are legally accurate, clear, and secure before distribution.
• Policy Clarification: Break down complex legislative updates (such as the SAVE America Act, HB 4765, or local ballot initiatives) into simple, reassuring talking points so voters know their rights and how to protect them.
• Community Presentations: Deliver engaging voting rights presentations at United Wednesdays, local places of worship, cultural centers, and partner events.
• Peer-to-Peer Networks: Coordinate and train a network of roughly 50 "Community Educators"—trusted volunteer leaders who share voting resources directly within their own networks.
• Impact Tracking: Document community presentation metrics, including locations, dates, attendance, and resources distributed, to evaluate our overall outreach.

2. Voter Case Management

When a voter reaches out with a question, hurdle, or technical issue, it becomes an open case. The Associate manages our civic intake process to ensure every question gets an answer.

• Intake Management: Open, track, and guide voter inquiries through our internal intake system.
• Timely Responses: Strive for a standard 72-hour turnaround for resolving or routing cases to the proper support teams.
• Issue Categories: Manage cases regarding registration statuses, ID or documentation updates, absentee ballot tracking, provisional voting, and physical accessibility needs.
• Trend Identification: Monitor incoming inquiries for regional trends (e.g., multiple issues emerging from the same voting precinct) and share those patterns with the Election Administration and Field Associate.
• Direct Assistance: Walk community members through document-gathering processes, ensuring they have the information needed to register and vote confidently.
• Reflection & Reporting: Draft a voter case summary after election cycles to capture total volume, common problem areas, and strategic notes for future seasons.

3. Ballot Chase Program

With a significant portion of Michiganders choosing to vote by absentee ballot, this program connects directly with voters to ensure their ballots are successfully completed and returned.

• Program Readiness: Set up the program tracking frameworks, outreach templates, and volunteer pipelines by early summer.
• Active Outreach: Launch full ballot-chase operations ahead of early voting windows, connecting non-partisantly with voters who have requested but not yet returned their mail-in ballots.
• Volunteer Scaling: Mobilize and coordinate teams of phone bankers and neighborhood canvassers to assist with voter outreach.
• Targeted Follow-Up: Prioritize outreach methods (calls, texts, or door knocks) to answer questions for voters living in high-priority or historically under-resourced precincts.
• Data Accuracy: Ensure all outreach touches are recorded cleanly in our tracking system to avoid duplicating calls.

4. United Wednesdays Coordination

United Wednesdays acts as our signature weekly space for community joy, culture, and civic action.

• Event Organizing: Manage the rotating schedule of host cities for United Wednesdays from mid-June through November.
• Core Program Elements: Ensure every event seamlessly blends core civic steps (voter registration, Know Your Rights information) with community storytelling and connection.
• Cultural Curation: Coordinate engaging local elements—including food, music, and local artists—to make civic education welcoming and celebratory.
• Theme Integration: Align events with rotating cultural touchstones (e.g., "Know Your Rights, Protect the Block" or "Democracy Is a Block Party").
• Registration Targets: Support our broader team goal of registering 500+ new voters over the cycle through United Wednesdays, campus visits, and community tabling.

5. Voter Services Volunteer Pipeline

• Network Building: Assist in building a robust, supported network of volunteers across the voter services lane.
• Training Coordination: Organize training calendars for Community Educators, hotline teams, and ballot chase volunteers.
• Roster Health: Keep volunteer schedules, contact sheets, and completed training records organized and accessible.

6. Coalition Collaboration

• Eco-System Spaces: Participate in relevant coalition workgroups, such as the Public Education and Youth Vote tables, to stay aligned with statewide partners.
• Internal Rhythms: Share brief, weekly operational updates with the Deputy Director to celebrate wins and map out upcoming priorities.

Skills & Qualifications

Required

• Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience in direct voter services, community organizing, case management, or a closely related public-facing field.
• Relationship Building: Exceptional interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills. Comfort working alongside and learning from diverse communities, including Black, Arab American, Yemeni, Bangladeshi, Somali, Latino, and immigrant neighborhoods.
• Organization: Strong project management skills, with a comfort for managing high-volume tasks like community inquiries or case updates without losing track of details.
• Policy Mastery: Ability to learn and confidently explain voting guidelines and documentation updates to the public in an accessible, easy-to-understand way.
• Schedule: Flexibility to work evening and weekend hours for events like United Wednesdays or active election weeks.
• Travel: Valid Michigan driver’s license and access to reliable transportation for regular travel across our target municipalities.

Strongly Preferred

• Prior experience with basic case tracking, intake sheets, or customer service data tools.
• Language skills in Arabic, Spanish, Bengali, or Somali are an incredible asset to our communities.
• Experience supporting absentee ballot programs, voter contact systems, or neighborhood canvassing.
• Familiarity with the local dynamics of Detroit, Dearborn, Flint, or Saginaw.
• A background in event planning, cultural organizing, or hosting community gatherings.

Additional Job Specifications

• Job Classification: Exempt, Full-Time, Temporary Surge Role (August 2026 – February 2027)
• Compensation: $60,000 (prorated annually)
• Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, primarily weekdays with routine evening and weekend hours based on community event schedules.
• Location: Hybrid (Detroit, MI office & virtual options)
