Engineering Supervisor

Job DescriptionPosition Overview: Provide substation physical engineering, technical support, and supervision to a Transmission Substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations. This role includes both direct billable client work (project work) and project management support for projects. The incumbent is expected to lead discipline work for projects, perform responsible charge engineering duties, and manage project schedules and budgets. The incumbent will also support proposal development, project cost estimating as well as supporting business development efforts.Duties & ResponsibilitiesLeadership and communication skills commensurate with leading a team of technical professionals in Engineering, Design and DraftingAbility to create, reinforce, and improve technical teams in the execution of Engineering designs for clients and the delivery of projects with high quality, on time, and budgetAdvanced understanding of substation design to include equipment arrangements, lightning protection, grounding, lighting, equipment specifics, and substation construction as it applies to utility substation and transmission line equipment facilitiesUnderstanding of basic needs of protection and control and civil/structural discipline as they apply to utility substation and transmission linesCreate and improve processes for substation physical design project scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules for substation projectsCreate QA/QC checklists to improve physical designs for utility stations through 500kV, including substation arrangements, sections, and elevations, foundation and grading plans, lighting plans and details, fence plans and details, grounding plans and details, rigid bus designs, strain bus designs, below grade designs to include duct banks and cable trenches, bus and equipment support structures, as well as a fundamental understating of circuit arrangements into and out of a substationSubject Matter Expert in the installation requirements of high voltage transformers, group operated disconnect switches, breakers, PTs, CCVTs, line turners, surge arresters, and other equipment within the substationProficient in creating grounding studies and designsPerform and produce reports for bus calculations, lightning protection calculations, and use software for ground grid designsAbility to create written specifications and implement them on engineering drawingsAbility to lead a team of engineers and designers in a lead engineer capacityOversee the work of junior staff and mentor designers/drafters.Industry expert in checking designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standardsCollaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines, colleagues, construction contractors, consultants, materials suppliers, and clientsVisit sites, advise on physical engineering issues, and modify design to solve issues during constructionRequirements8+ years' experience as a practicing engineerSupervise 4-8 direct reportsBachelor's degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering Program OR an approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEES OR graduation from a Master's or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering ProgramsLicensed Professional EngineerOther Skills/AbilitiesSelf-MotivatedWork independentlyTeam-OrientedCustomer OrientedAble to manage multiple tasks and provide leadership to other team membersThink both creatively and logically to resolve design and development problemsAbility to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgroundsProficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendationsGood written and oral communication skillsDesired QualificationsExperience in the utility industryNOTE: This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
