Advanced Practice Provider, Plastic Surgery

Overview Department: BSD SUR - Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery: Administration About The Department: At UChicago Medicine, faculty and staff in the Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery are dedicated to caring for patients across the spectrum of plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery, including breast reconstruction, craniomaxillofacial and microsurgery. Our plastic surgeons pursue pioneering approaches in post-oncologic reconstructive surgery, hand surgery, craniofacial surgery, and cosmetic aesthetic surgery, and collaborate with patients to achieve their desired outcomes. Investigators conduct research in tissue engineering and craniofacial/bone biology with implications for craniofacial defects from trauma or tumor surgery. The Advanced Practice Provider supports clinical care and patient services that may include educational, research, clinical support, and administrative activities under the direction and supervision of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery team. Responsibilities Assist in all plastic surgery procedures, including mastectomies, breast reconstruction, tissue expanders, breast augmentations, abdominoplasties, and general plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. Provide surgical and clinical support in multiple locations including Hyde Park and River East. Assist in preparing for and expediting the start of surgery in the OR. Prepare patients for surgery and provide preoperative and postoperative instructions; facilitate discharge planning. Maintain departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, infection control standards. Round and provide clinical care for in-house patients; prepare charts for clinic (e.g., obtain IOE, outside records, pre-charting). Assist physicians and provide independent clinical care to patients in the clinic. Hold weekly cosmetic injectables clinics and coordinate patient education needs with staff, case managers, and other clinical personnel. Assess patient health status and needs in both in-patient and out-patient settings; perform specified diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as appropriate. Contribute to development and implementation of comprehensive care plans; ensure appropriate follow-up in the outpatient setting. Model professional behavior and provide expert care in all care settings; apply patient care protocols for adult and geriatric patients. Collaborate with care team members to provide direct in- and out-patient care; participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care. Participate in the development, review, and evaluation of Surgical 1st Assist procedures; establish collaborative relationships with health care colleagues. Maintain current knowledge by reading professional literature and attending educational conferences. Evaluate goals and outcomes considering safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness; develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions as part of the patient plan of care. Demonstrate understanding of adverse drug reactions with attention to vulnerable populations and coordinate APP training and professional development activities. Qualifications Education: Minimum qualifications include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college. Work Experience: Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline. Certifications: Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration; eligible to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). Preferred Education: Completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program (ARC-PA). Experience: Clinical experience in a related area of specialty. Licenses and Certifications: Current physician assistant license/registration in Illinois; NCCPA certification by start date. Preferred Competencies: Direct patient care, independent practice under supervising physician, strong verbal and written communication, ability to perform detailed work and manage multiple tasks, discretion and confidentiality, problem solving, and ability to train or lead others.
