Description of Work

This position provides technical work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment with emphasis on traffic control equipment & related devices for Division 6. The duties to be performed include installing traffic signal equipment, wiring detectors, installing and wiring controllers, tracing out electrical wiring diagrams to locate trouble, dismantling and reassembling components, replacing worn or faulty parts. Work will be performed without constant supervision and will be evaluated by the supervisor for efficient use of time and proper operation of Traffic Control Systems repaired and maintained. Skills of this position include general knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe and efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in electrical/electronic trade, ability to diagnose sources of equipment failures, ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. The Electronics Technician is expected to maintain proper records of all signal work accomplished and keep accurate record of time worked and all materials used via computer.

Additional Expectations:

Employees must possess the ability to lift 80+ pounds, shoulder high. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 50+ feet in height without accommodations. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. The employees shall have the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signals and other traffic control devices. Employees will be expected to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and excessive heat conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction.

Position is subject to emergency callback and overtime and may require non-traditional work hours including weekends, holidays, nights, and times of emergency. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class "B" Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As part of the hiring approval process, NCDOT will run a driver license check after conducting interviews, but prior to offering a position. Prospective drivers must meet the following standards to be eligible to operate NCDOT vehicles:

• No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years
• No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years.
• Valid, current North Carolina driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Note: Employees permanently residing in adjacent states may operate a DOT vehicle using a current, valid, appropriate driver's license from their state of residence.)
• If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state driver's license in the past ten years, the driver's record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained. Such applicants and those who currently possess an out-of-state driver's license will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states.

Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Management prefers applicants with the following:

• Knowledge of standard test equipment used to diagnose electronic components
• Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams.
• Knowledge of the National Electric Code.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal technical supervision.
• Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and (1) one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
