Heat Treat Operator
The Heat Treat Operator safely sets up, operates, and monitors automatic upsetter equipment and related machinery in a heavy industrial forging environment. This role focuses on producing high-quality parts by following established procedures, performing precise measurements, and maintaining a clean, safe work area while supporting continuous production.
Responsibilities
- Start up, check, and operate the automatic upsetter and related equipment, including furnaces or heaters, cranes, and conveyors as needed.
- Work closely with utility personnel and helpers to transport raw materials safely and efficiently throughout the production process.
- Maintain a safe and clean workspace, including the areas on and around the assigned upsetter machine and the surrounding work environment.
- Measure raw materials and finished products to verify conformance to specifications using hand and pneumatic tools such as tape measures, dial indicators, gauges, and micrometers.
- Inspect the condition of raw materials, monitor the quality of completed products, and track the amount of scrap material to ensure adherence to quality standards and audits for each product line.
- Update product line documentation when changes occur to existing part setups, production cadence, or process requirements.
- Communicate via radio any relevant updates related to upsetter performance, including changes to unit stock, safety concerns, mechanical issues, or other interruptions to production.
- Follow all plant safety rules, procedures, and regulations at all times.
- Perform general labor tasks such as material handling, grinding, cutting, and basic equipment support as needed.
- Assist with machine setup, troubleshooting, and basic adjustments to support efficient operation.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support production and facility needs.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of experience working in a manufacturing environment.
- At least 1 year of experience operating industrial forklifts (tow motors).
- Ability to consistently lift up to 50 pounds.
- Experience operating production machinery or machine tools in an industrial setting.
- Ability to use measurement tools such as tape measures, gauges, calipers, and micrometers to verify part dimensions.
- Basic inspection skills, including inspecting parts, using inspection gauges, and identifying defects or nonconforming product.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, including production documentation and safety procedures.
- Willingness and ability to work any shift as required by a unionized environment.
- Comfort working in a heavy industrial forging environment that is not temperature controlled.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in steel manufacturing, forging, or foundry environments.
- Background in machine operating and machine setup, including press brake or similar equipment.
- Familiarity with grinding operations and the use of grinders for finishing or deburring parts.
- Experience with slitter, die cast, extrusion, or saw operation and cutting metal.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and use blueprint reading skills to verify product specifications.
- Experience with fabrication and general labor in an industrial setting.
- Basic troubleshooting skills to identify and communicate equipment or process issues.
- Comfort using radios or similar communication devices in a production environment.

Work Environment
This position is based in a unionized, heavy industrial forging facility that is not temperature controlled, so conditions can be hot, noisy, and physically demanding. The work involves operating large industrial equipment such as automatic upsetters, furnaces or heaters, cranes, conveyors, and industrial forklifts. Employees must be open to working any shift due to union scheduling, with three primary shifts: 1st shift from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., 2nd shift from 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and 3rd shift from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Overtime applies after 8 hours of work in a day. Off-shift roles include additional hourly premiums for 2nd and 3rd shifts. The environment requires consistent use of personal protective equipment, adherence to strict safety procedures, and readiness for hands-on, physically intensive work around metal, heat, and heavy machinery.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $28.00/hr.
