WEST POINT PUBLIC WORKS is looking for an experienced, self-motivated and dependable individual to serve as our FLEET MECHANIC .


The right individual will perform preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, and troubleshoot mechanical parts on any and all types of machinery within the department.


Work a Monday - Friday schedule with weekends off!

Starting Salary: $45133.37 ($21.70 p/hour) (Salary Range: 45133.37-69955.77) Grade: 15

OR HIGHER Dependent on Experience
* Qualified Individuals may transition to the FLEET MANAGER ()
* Starting Salary: $63507.19 ($30.53 p/hour) Grade 22

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Inspects vehicles to determine the nature and extent of problem
• Develops and executes task schedules accordingly
• Removing and disassembling units such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and pumps to inspect for wear and make necessary repairs
• Repairing, overhauling, or replacing parts, such as pistons, rods, valves, carburetors, bearings, distributors, shock absorbers, and exhaust systems
• Uses a vast variety of specialty tools and diagnostic equipment
• Detects and reports defective materials and dangerous conditions to the appropriate personnel
• Instructs and trains other crew members in procedures and safety requirements
• Operates vehicles and equipment such as a dump truck, backhoe, skid-steering loader, trailer
• Operates power equipment such as mowers, brush chippers, trimmers, and snow blower
• Uses tools such as hammer, axe, wrench, screwdriver, and level
• Performs prescribed preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and tools as required; cleans and maintains equipment in good working condition
• Reads and interprets equipment manuals to perform required maintenance and service
• May provide input into employee performance evaluations prepared by the Director, Public Works Department

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent plus minimum of two years' experience in public works or a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of basic tools and equipment
• Knowledge and use of safety precautions and equipment including reflective vest, steel-toed boots, lifting belt, eye protection, ear protection, gloves
• Basic knowledge of mechanical skills including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic troubleshooting and routine equipment repairs
• Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public
  Licenses or Certifications:
  Valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License required after six months
