2480m - Sr Engineer, Transmission System Planning, Non-Wires Alternatives (Hybrid)

The Senior Engineer in Transmission System Planning, NWA serves as a transmission-focused subject matter expert, specializing in power system studies and solutions development, including Non-Wires Alternatives. This role requires extensive experience in modeling, analysis, and planning-level designs of transmission lines and substation facilities in an electric power system. Additionally, the position will also lead the evaluation of NWA for transmission projects enterprisewide and will ensure all transmission projects presented to the regulatory entities in MA, CT and NH are assessed for cost-effectiveness, reliability, and environmentally responsible alternatives to traditional infrastructure. Responsibilities Conduct comprehensive NWA evaluations for required transmission projects, including those that are subject to review by the regulatory entities in CT, MA and NH Perform Benefit Cost Analyses comparing traditional transmission solutions with distributed energy resources (DERs), energy efficiency, demand response, and other NWAs Collaborate with Distribution Planning, Integrated Energy Planning, and Regulatory Affairs teams and other disciplines to ensure alignment with state-specific NWA requirements Develop and maintain models and tools for evaluating NWAs, including production cost modeling and benefit cost analysis Prepare technical documentation and testimony for regulatory filings and proceedings Monitor and incorporate evolving regulatory requirements and best practices related to NWAs in MA, CT, and NH Collaborate, perform, and lead reliability and/or economic driven studies including voltage, thermal, transfer limit, short circuit, and stability assessments Analyze and assess complex transmission systems at numerous voltage levels. Document and communicate results and recommendations as appropriate including data manipulation, report writing, and summary presentations Continually strive to innovate and integrate improvements to increase the precision and efficiency of transmission planning. Seek out and develop subject matter expert skills to mentor and support the team Represent the Company, collaborate and interact with internal teams and industry peers on regional activities with NERC, NPCC, ISO-NE etc. Develop and apply a thorough understanding of various planning criteria, guidelines, standards (e.g. NERC, NPCC, etc.) and analysis software packages such as PSSE, TARA, ASPEN, Synergi, Cyme Mentor and train junior staff on technical analysis methods and standard procedures Qualifications BSEE, Power Systems, required, an advanced degree, MSEE or MBA preferred Professional Engineer’s License (PE) preferred 5+ years of electric utility power systems experience, including transmission or distribution system planning Strong understanding of economic evaluation methods, including net present value (NPV), benefit-cost analysis, and avoided cost modeling Experience testifying or supporting testimony in regulatory proceedings Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially for regulatory and stakeholder engagement Experience with NWA evaluations or DER integration, preferred Knowledge of regulatory frameworks and legal requirements for NWAs in MA, CT and/or NH Experience presenting technical findings to regulators, stakeholders, and internal leadership Strong understanding of T&D Power Systems Engineering, including Practical & Theoretical knowledge of Planning, Operations, and Engineering Design Knowledge & Interpretation of Power System Studies Assumptions and Results, e.g. Power Flow, Stability, Short Circuit, etc. Proficiency using Power System Analytics software including PSSE, TARA, ASPEN, Synergi, Cyme Knowledge of Regional/Local Criteria & Compliance: (NERC, NPCC, ISO, etc.) Fortune 500 diversified energy services firm (electric utility / gas utility) that has been providing energy products and services throughout the northeast United States for 100 years.
