Title Counselor K-5 (Guidance Teacher)
Job Goal: To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans.
Essential Functions:
- Provides consultation to students about decision making and goal setting
- Works to discover and develop special abilities of students
- Assists administration, staff, parents, and students in recommendations for educational opportunities outside the regular academic setting
- Encourages students in their participation in school and community activities
- Provides counseling in educational planning and placement
- Provides counseling to students about adjustment to school and transition from grade level to grade level
- Provides counseling to students in terms of increasing self-awareness and developing a positive self-concept
- Uses teacher and student participation in the implementation of the guidance and counseling program
- Aids school staff in the early identification of student problems
- Aids school staff in program planning for students with special needs
- Aids school staff in the interpretation of standardized test data and writing school plan for improvement
- Orients staff to the guidance and counseling services available
- Provides administration with an updated schedule and counseling activities
- Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such issues as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment
- Provides counseling to students who are referred as having problems in attendance, retention, discipline, and pre-delinquency
- Confers with parents when necessary
- Interprets the guidance program to the community
- Provides inservice training in guidance for teachers and student teachers
- Aids school staff in the matters of student discipline
- Assists in the orientation of new faculty members when asked to do so by the administration
- Performs other duties as assigned
Physical Demands: This job may require lifting of objects that exceed 25 lbs., with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs. Other physical demands that may be required are as follows: Kneeling, Talking, Hearing, Seeing.

Adaptability to accepting responsibility for the direction, control, or planning of an activity. Adaptability to making generalizations, evaluations, or decisions based on sensory or judgmental criteria. Adaptability to dealing with people beyond giving and receiving instruction.
Capacity and Ability Requirements: Intelligence: Ability to understand instructions and underlying principles; ability to reason and make judgments. Verbal: Ability to understand meanings of words and ideas associated with them. Numerical: Ability to perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately. Data Perception: Ability to understand and interpret information that may be presented in the form of graphs, charts, or tables.
Work Conditions: Normal working environment.
Terms of Employment: 200-day contract Teacher salary scale.
Immediate Supervisor: Principal.
