Position Overview
The contract physician shall provide immediate evaluation and management of emergency patients as they present themselves for care. When treating urgent and non-urgent patients the contract physician shall abide by the service standards established by the hospital commander or his/her designee regarding expectations for timeliness of care and service.
Duties include:
- Physician will perform a full range of medical services within the scope of Emergency Medicine or Urgent Care to all patients and eligible beneficiaries regardless of underlying disease process or physical condition.
- Document appropriate history, physical examination, required laboratory and x-ray examinations, preliminary diagnosis (as appropriate) prior to healthcare treatment.
- Physician shall see patients triaged as urgent/acute vice emergent in a timely manner and not less than three patients per hour during times when emergent workload is low.
- Physician may be the sole provider of medical treatment in the Emergency Center during a scheduled shift and shall be fully aware that other than ancillary and support personnel, he or she shall be fully prepared to provide all of the emergency services required without assistance or supplementation by other facility physicians.
- Physician shall be able to adequately diagnose and treat diseases/injuries; perform medical procedures/tasks to include, but not limited to the following: disease and/or injuries related to the Skin, Head, Eyes, Nose, Throat, Neck, Cardiovascular System, Gastrointestinal System, Lymphatic System, Musculoskeletal System, Genitourinary System, Reproductive System, Psychiatric Disease, central Nervous System, Endocrine System and Peripheral Nervous System.
- Provide definitive medical care to reduce the emergency situation and enable the patient to safely continue care as an outpatient with follow care as required. Follow-up abnormal reports are the responsibility of the ordering physician. However to assure, correct medical follow-up for these patients, all abnormal x-ray and lab reports received on patients seen by the contract physicians shall be reviewed by the contract physician on duty at the times these reports are available for review.
- Contract physicians shall review laboratory and x-ray reports daily and inform the ordering physician of actions taken.
- Provide emergency medical care to inpatients, if part of a code team response, and outpatients, summon appropriate on-call specialties as necessary, and continue medical management until the arrival of the appropriate specialist.
- Respond to "code Blue" (cardiac or respiratory arrest) medical emergency alerts within the hospital and provide resuscitation treatment until more specialized treatment arrives.
- Should resuscitation efforts be unsuccessful, the physician shall pronounce the patient dead, complete the necessary records, and notify the next of kin, if the next of kin is physically present.
- Patients presenting themselves with non-acute conditions shall be reassured and treated in priority as established by medical triage.
- Provide medical care to patients in holding area when necessary.
- Prepare appropriate narrative summaries and patient profiles changes and document history, physical examinations and preoperative diagnosis.
- Maintain documentation of treatment in accordance with established procedures.
- Become familiar with hospital formulary, prescribe and dispense pharmaceuticals according to the availability of drugs listed there in accordance with established polices and using established military treatment facility (MTF) procedures.
- Only a physician can dispense medication to patients triaged to the emergency center.
- Nursing staff may assess the dispensing machine(s) but cannot label medications or dispense medications to patients.
- Contract physicians prescribing medications for patients after the MTF pharmacy has closed must dispense the medication themselves.
- Verify the contents and correctness of all prepared and transcribed reports by affixing his/her own signature and stamp to all copies of the document and validating its contents.
Qualification:
- M.D. or D.O. and successful completion of postgraduate training.
- Must have a current, full, active, unrestricted medical license (with no limitations, stipulations or pendingadverse actions) in any U.S. jurisdiction. License must be unencumbered and remain in effect during theentirety of contract employment.
- Must have worked as an active ER Physician for a minimum of 1 year in the past 3 years for more than 20hours per week in a similar or higher level emergency care setting
- Board Certified in Emergency Medicine or be Board Certified in Internal Medicine or Family Practice and have extensive current emergency medicine experience in the past 12 months in a similar or higher-level emergency care setting.
- Must have a current individual Drug Enforcement Administration registration.
