Job Description
The role will perform and be responsible for leading roadway design activities for a variety of state and municipal projects for streets/highways/freeways. Our ideal candidate will be capable of leading a design squad containing a range of experience levels by providing clear directions to other staff while performing and being responsible for a full range of professional roadway engineering assignments, including modeling, preparation of design calculations, plan production, quantities, cost estimates, reports, and quality control.
This person will be team-oriented, self-motivated, technically proficient, and possess strong written and verbal communication skills. The position will entail a full range of professional roadway design activities, serving in a key technical role for the development of our projects and providing the framework for multidisciplinary teams to deliver our projects.
Primary Duties
- Lead the traffic technical design aspects for a variety of transportation projects, including coordination with other team members and disciplines.
- Apply a broad understanding of civil engineering and other fields to reach innovative and interdependent solutions.
- Design of TH/MOT, signing & marking, signals, lighting, ITS, and all related documentation necessary for construction of plans.
- Conduct traffic analysis, safety audits, traffic impact studies, traffic signal timing, traffic signal design, and calculations forming the basis of design recommendations.
- Generate clear and concise technical reports summarizing analysis findings, description of the issues, and recommendations with supporting rationale.
- Read and interpret engineering plans, specifications, and reports.
- Prepares and checks plans, calculations, cost estimates, and recommendations.
- Create project work plans to track and manage traffic design budget and design team for projects when assigned.
- Participate in inter-discipline quality reviews. Perform checking and design quality reviews.
- Perform effective technical write-ups for proposals.
- Assist with business development and marketing efforts on transportation project pursuits.
- Ensure the completion of work based on budgets and project schedules.
- Experience speaking to the public and interacting with local and state agencies is preferred.
Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills)
- Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE) or a related field.
- Minimum ten (10) years of design experience.
- P.E, Registration required in the jurisdiction of the position or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Other certifications are a plus but not required, including California T.E. and/or PTOE certification.
- Local State and Municipality experience.
- Proven knowledge and skills in both MicroStation and AutoCAD.
- Preferred candidates will have skills using traffic modeling software: Synchro, HCS, Vissim, and AGI32 (lighting).
- Knowledge of roadway modeling software a plus: Civil 3D and OpenRoads.
- Experience with state and municipal transportation agency projects.
- Track record providing high-quality technical design deliverables, meeting scopes, schedules, and budgets on a range of transportation projects.

Working Conditions and Environment
This position will require general supervision and will have to use independent judgment within established guidelines. Generally, uses the advanced knowledge to analyze, interpret, or make deductions from varying facts or circumstances. Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project, and be able to promote a positive team environment. Working knowledge of dealing with a diverse population while using tact, diplomacy, and respect.
