General Statement of Job Deputy Sheriff, under the direct supervision of the Sergeant, performs generalized law enforcement and public safety work in the protection of life and property, and the execution of orders issued through the jurisdiction of the Sheriff of Martin County. This class works under general supervision and requires considerable judgment, initiative, and skill in a variety of situations. Responsibilities require consistent attention and commitment to the agency's mission. All assigned duties and tasks are expected to be performed in an effective, efficient and safe manner. The jobholder must accept the responsibility to support and promote the organization's mission and comply with its directives. Personal conduct and behavior (on duty as well as off duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public's trust or confidence in the agency or its members. Deputy Sheriff is a sworn officer and as with all sworn personnel, has the power of arrest and is capable of performing the tasks associated with sworn status. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Essential Functions Care, custody, control and movement of prisoners within the Courtroom and Courthouse. Provide security in the Courthouse. Coordinating Courtroom activity. Requesting movement of prisoners. Verifying warrants. Answering/direction calls from the general public. Inspecting prisoners for safety and wellbeing. When not handling major and subordinate duties, incumbents are expected to use their self-directed work time in an efficient manner by self-initiating performance on those priority tasks assigned to this position by command personnel. The incumbent is expected to accept the responsibility for knowing his/her routine job assignments and performing them without having to be consistently told to do so. Court Security Deputies shall also perform related duties as assigned by their superiors. Additional Duties Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Education and Training Graduation from High school or an equivalent program. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license. Certification from a Department of Law Enforcement Police Standards and Training Commission. Physical Demands Frequent stooping and bending required, as well as manual dexterity, fine motor skills, and the ability to grasp objects. Position requires color perception. Requires the ability to see, hear, and speak. Incumbent must be able to defend themselves, defend others, or otherwise gain control of physically resistant individuals. Requires the ability to walk for extended periods of time. Work Environment Work conditions are primarily of an indoor nature. Few tasks require heavy lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying heavy loads. Mental alertness is very important because of the need to make critical concerning personnel and their operations. However, as a sworn member with the responsibility to enforce violations of law, physical and mental demands can change dramatically within a few seconds, taxing the maximum of human endurance. Therefore, incumbents must maintain a physical and mental state of fitness and readiness that enables them to handle (with minimal force and often without assistance) occasional contacts and involvements with dangerous and potentially dangerous people and equipment. #J-18808-Ljbffr MARTIN COUNTY SHERIFF
