Robotic hands are a dedicated area of development for our group and this role offers significant ownership in solving challenges related to handling everyday objects with different shapes, weights, and textures. Our robotics engineers work end to end to build complete systems, partnering closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to turn concepts into products. Key ResponsibilitiesMake early architecture and component decisions with safety, manufacturability, reliability, and serviceability in mindOwn decisions about mechanisms that determine dexterity, strength, and range of motionDevelop and tune hand controls so the robot can grasp securely, adjust its grip, and handle fragile or unfamiliar objectsChampion systems integration by partnering with electrical, mechanical, and software peers to bring the complete hand system to lifeConduct rigorous reliability testing, failure analysis, and root-cause investigations, using experiments and analysis to guide the next designRequired Qualifications Experience designing robotic hand mechanisms and actuator control systemsDemonstrated hands-on experience turning ideas into hardware and bridging theory and practiceExperience taking ambiguous, open-ended problems and creating workable designsIntrinsic curiosity about hard problems and the motivation to learn unfamiliar systemsAbility to lead reviews, influence cross-functional teams, and communicate risks and solutions clearlyBachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, computer science, robotics, physics, or a related engineering disciplinePreferred Qualifications Advanced understanding of robotic hand mechanisms, kinematics, dynamics, and motion and force control.Experience with compact motor-transmission assemblies, tendon-driven or linkage-based fingers, force or tactile sensing, and grasp stabilityFamiliarity with robotic hardware such as actuators, gearboxes, motors, bearings and sensorsHands-on prototyping skills and experience troubleshooting mechanical and electromechanical systemsKnowledge of reliability testing, failure analysis, and root-cause investigationsHands-on experience using structural FEA to drive design optimization, including stiffness, strength, and mass optimizationStrong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, manufacturing processes, GD&T, and tolerance analysisProficiency with 3D CAD software such as Onshape, SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, or similar tools.3+ years of experience taking robotic or electromechanical hardware from concept through validation and deployment.Additional RequirementsAvailable to work extended hours and weekends as neededTo conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
