Data Engineer IThe Data Engineer I works with cross-functional teams to develop and support data ingestion, transformation, and reporting solutions for ZincFive's NiZn-based products, battery systems, manufacturing operations, and supporting technologies. This role contributes to the development and operation of data pipelines within ZincFive's Azure Databricks environment, helping make product, test, manufacturing, and operational data available for analysis. The Data Engineer I follows established architecture, development, testing, security, and data-governance practices and takes responsibility for delivering reliable, documented work within assigned areas. This role will work onsite at ZincFive headquarters in Tualatin, Oregon and reports to the Lead Software Engineer.Data Engineer I Job Duties:Develop and maintain data ingestion and transformation pipelines using Azure DatabricksImplement assigned pipeline components using Python, SQL, Apache Spark, and Delta LakeIngest data from files, cloud storage, databases, APIs, telemetry systems, and other approved sourcesDevelop bronze, silver, and gold data transformations using established medallion architecture patternsCreate and maintain Databricks notebooks, workflows, jobs, and supporting configurationWrite automated tests and data-quality checks to verify pipeline correctnessMonitor scheduled data jobs and assist with investigating pipeline failures and data-quality issuesPerform data validation, reconciliation, troubleshooting, and defect resolutionAssist with schema development, table design, data mapping, and source-to-target documentationSupport the onboarding of new datasets into Unity CatalogFollow established security, access-control, naming, lineage, and data-governance practicesParticipate in code reviews, design reviews, sprint planning, and technical discussionsMaintain technical documentation for pipelines, tables, data sources, and operational proceduresCommunicate progress, risks, and technical issues to engineering leadership and project stakeholdersWork with cross-functional teams to understand data requirements and deliver defined data solutionsSupport continuous improvement of pipeline reliability, performance, maintainability, and cost efficiencyAbility to work independently and as part of a teamOther duties as assignedJob Requirements:Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, software engineering, information systems, engineering, or a related field0-2 years of professional experience in data engineering, software development, analytics engineering, or a related fieldExperience using Python and SQL through coursework, internships, personal projects, or professional workFamiliarity with relational data, schemas, joins, aggregations, and data-transformation conceptsFamiliarity with data pipelines, ETL processes, and structured data formatsBasic understanding of software-development practices, including version control and code reviewAbility to troubleshoot technical problems and learn unfamiliar systemsAbility to follow established technical designs and engineering standardsTechnical documentation skillsDemonstrates effective communication, organization, collaboration, and problem-solving skillsPreferred Experience/Skills:Experience with Azure Databricks, Apache Spark, or PySparkFamiliarity with Delta Lake and medallion data architectureFamiliarity with Microsoft Azure services, particularly Azure Data Lake StorageFamiliarity with Databricks Workflows, Unity Catalog, or Databricks Asset BundlesExperience working with REST APIs, JSON, CSV, Parquet, or time-series dataExperience creating automated tests or data-quality checksFamiliarity with Git, GitHub, CI/CD, and infrastructure or configuration as codeFamiliarity with dashboards, business intelligence tools, or data visualizationInternship, academic, or project experience building an end-to-end data pipelineExperience with industrial telemetry, manufacturing data, battery systems, laboratory test data, or Internet of Things dataKey Competencies:Attention to detail and organizational skillsExcellent communication skills – verbal and writtenGood judgment with solid decision makingCustomer service orientationTeamwork and collaborationContinuous improvementPhysical Requirements and Working Conditions:Work involves sitting, repetitive motion, occasional walking, and lifting up to 15 poundsNormal office/lab environmentAbility to wear appropriate PPE when requiredMust be able to maintain a level state of alertness while performing this jobSalary offers will depend on factors that include the location you work from, your level, education, training, specific skills, years of experience and comparison to other employees already in this role.In addition, the successful candidate for this position will become eligible for a comprehensive set of outstanding benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401k, paid sick time, paid time off for vacation, paid holidays, paid community service days, professional/personal learning program, and applicable state/federal paid family leave.ZincFive is committed to employing a diverse workforce.
