Instructor, Truck DrivingThis position places a high priority on hiring a team player who is professional in conduct, communication, and appearance. Instructors are expected to communicate respectfully and effectively with students, colleagues, and the public, to always conduct themselves professionally, and to comply with the program's dress code.Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of truck driving.Display an ability to interpret and evaluate the safety practices of truck driving.Stay current in their subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and attendance at professional meetings, conferences, or workshops.Stay current on rules and regulations related to DMV and FMCSA requirements.Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate.Possess a working knowledge of basic truck systems sufficient to diagnose common mechanical problems and to properly explain and conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection.Teach a course load appropriate to their field, discipline, and position title.Follow established instructional plans and modify instructional methods and strategies, where appropriate, to meet diverse student needs — with the ability to adjust delivery as needed, recognizing when an adjustment is necessary and exercising sound judgment on when to make that adjustment independently versus when to notify someone.Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students.Employ available instructional technology when appropriate.Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives.Follow and enforce the course syllabi as prescribed, including the program's house rules and code of conduct.Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning.Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records in accordance with NC DMV, FMCSA, and program compliance requirements.Teach classes as assigned by the College.Teach non-credit courses within field or discipline as needed.Distribute syllabi and approved course outlines for all assigned sections in accordance with program and divisional policies.Maintain confidentiality of student information.Substitute for other instructors within field or discipline in case of an absence.Exercise stewardship of college facilities and materials.Serves on college, divisional, and departmental committees as assigned.Participate in meetings and events required by the college, division, and department chairs.Respond in a timely fashion to information requests from college, division, and department chairs.Support both part-time and full-time colleagues.Contribute to program curriculum development processes.Provide attendance data as required.Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators, as an individual or as part of a team.Meet all FMCSA and NCDMV guidelines and requirements with regards to maintaining an active Class A Commercial Driver's License and as a NCDMV Third Party Testing affiliate (if applicable).Determine the need for maintenance and repair of vehicles.Fuel trucks and other equipment.Willing to attend a one-week Third-Party CDL Examiner certification course in Raleigh, NC, at a time determined by the Director of Transportation Programs, and to pass the background check required for that training. Once certified, work additional days as needed to administer CDL skills and road tests; administer and score all tests accurately; and ensure all examiner paperwork is accurate, with completion reports run and filed accurately.Duties may include day, evening, and weekend hours.Maintain familiarity with college goals, mission, and long-range plans.Contribute to planning and development processes through appropriate mechanisms and channels.Participate in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the college and its constituents.Perform professional responsibilities in accordance with pertinent goals, missions, and plans of the college, division, and departments.Participate in the marketing, recruitment, and retention of students, faculty, and staff, through participation in community career exposure events.Other duties, as assigned.Receives direct supervision from the Director of Transportation.External relationships include:CDL Division of North Carolina Department of Motor VehiclesSCC advisory committee for Truck Driver TrainingFMCSAMinimum of two (2) years' experience operating a vehicle requiring a Class A Commercial Driver's License; five (5) years preferred.Valid NC Class A CDL.Training experience preferred (with a school or as a company trainer).Educational experience preferred.Acceptable and continuously maintained Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) throughout employment.Must be able to pass a background check.Current or past Hazmat endorsement preferred.Basic computer knowledge required (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams).Subject to a pre-employment DOT drug screen and random drug screens throughout employment, per FMCSA regulations.Agriculture experience is preferred.
