Summary:The Director champions best practice and evidence-based initiatives and serves as a catalyst for change. The Director supports professional nursing practice and empowers and supports nurses to continuously improve in the delivery of safe, effective, compassionate, and efficient nursing care in collaboration with all health care disciplines. This position is responsible for participating in the strategic planning for nursing services and the realization of nursing goals. The Director ensures compliance with standards established by professional nursing organizations, national, state, and local regulatory agencies, and institutional policies and procedures. The Director is accountable for supporting professional nursing practice that upholds high standards of integrity and ethical behavior. The Director mentors' others, role models professionalism, and participation in activities such as nursing organizations, nursing research, the community, and bodies that shape health care policies and practices. Listen to and honor patient and family perspectives and choices.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Service: Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.Upholds the Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance.Adheres to all St. Joseph Medical Center Healthcare policies on Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).Participates as a productive member of the Nursing Services leadership team.Serves as a change agent, assisting staff in understanding the importance, necessity, impact, and process of change.People:Collaborates with inter and interprofessional colleagues to ensure quality outcomes.Maintains visibility and open communication within the facility.Fosters relationships and communication with executive and nursing leadership, directors, managers, and staff that enable collaborative problem identification and resolution.Assesses, addresses, records and tracks staff competence.Fosters a proactive vs. reactive approach to problem identification and resolution.Actively participates on committees and task forces to meet goals.Promotes staff retention.Collaboratively establishes realistic, measurable, goals with each direct report.Provides regular performance feedback and appraisals based on individual goals and objectives.Ensures personnel management is consistent with state and federal laws and facility policy and procedure.Utilizes progressive disciplinary action process to address staff performance and behavior issues in a timely manner.Quality:Completes annual education requirements.Promotes of a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices.Identifies risks and hazards to patients through various risk assessments, with actions taken to mitigate patient harm.Champions the reduction of hospital acquired conditions through improved compliance with patient safety bundles and/or other formal performance improvement programs.Makes appropriate and timely decisions, considering patient safety and facility needs.Reports practice and conduct issues to regulatory agencies and organizational entities as indicated.Listen to and honor patient and family perspectives and choices.Acknowledge the patient's and family's knowledge, values, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds to ensure they are incorporated into the planning and delivery of care.Communicate and share complete and unbiased information with the patients and families in ways that are affirming and useful.Ensure that patients and families receive timely, complete, and accurate information to effectively participate in care and decision-making.Encourage and support patients and families in participating in care and decision making at the level they choose.Collaborate with patients, families, healthcare practitioners, and healthcare leaders in policy and program development, implementation and evaluation in facility design, in professional education, as well as delivery of care.Provides essential leadership for advancing the practice of the patient- and family-centered care.Ensures that the development and dissemination of materials, policy, and training increase the understanding and skills necessary to build effective partnerships. Actively solicits the ideas and perspectives of patients, families, clinicians, and staff encouraging everyone to share their safety stories.Consistently circulates and talks with staff, clinicians, patients, and familiesOffers empathy to a patient and/or impacted by an adverse event.Encourage the concept that "just culture" should prevail. Understands that a solution may create a "new way of doing things" that is not how it has always been done but is the right thing to do. Takes ownership of a patient safety related issue and openly acknowledges an ongoing problem requiring attention.Other duties as assigned.Growth:Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments.Enhances the patient experience by fostering a positive relationship with customers.Contributes to improving HCAHPS results.Proactively plans for succession.Finance:Promotes St. Joseph Medical Center resources while ensuring quality patient care.Effectively plans, prepares, and monitors the annual budget for areas of responsibility to achieve effective financial performance.Uses data and other relevant information to explain variations in operational expenses.Effectively plans, allocates, and monitors acquisition of supplies, services, equipment, and capital resources.Effectively plans for the maintenance and replacement of essential equipment and contracted services.Allocates personnel effectively and monitors and limits overtime and supplemental staff usage.Adheres to internal controls established for the department and organization.MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Licensed as a Registered Nurse accepted by Texas State Board of Nursing to engage in professional nursing.Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or related field.National Certification as recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center within two years of appointment. Three or more years of experience in the specialty area. Comprehensive knowledge of nursing procedures, processes, and acute care organizations. Technical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to area in order to effectively and work collaboratively with the leadership team, executive team, and staff. Certification requirements as defined by the certification policy. Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.Adept using Microsoft Office, online applications.Preferred:Bi or Multilingual.Previous leadership experience.Master's Degree, DNP/PhD Houston's oldest hospital is GROWING!
