School Nurse (RN) Per Diem Substitutes 2026-2027

Position School Nurse (RN) - Per Diem Substitute (Posting Number 2627-3762) Location District Wide Start Date As needed Qualifications Must have a current NYS license as a Registered Professional Nurse. CPR/AED AHA or ARC current certification. Minimum three (3) years of hospital, outpatient clinic/office or Emergency Room experience. Possess knowledge of emergency care in injury and illness, injury/illness triage and treatment skills. Pediatric/adolescent experience preferred; computer skills highly desirable. Current license and registration as a Registered Professional Nurse granted by New York State Education Department. Current certification in CPR‑AED BLS for Healthcare Professionals. Broad knowledge of health related issues in school age children and adequate proficiency in computer skills (e.g., electronic medical records, email, word processing, spreadsheet). Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students, teachers, parents and community members. Ability to carry out medical orders and procedures prescribed by a healthcare provider and Individual Health Plans written by the RN, clarifying questions as they arise. Good observational skills, mental alertness, initiative, cheerfulness, patience, emotional stability and moral character. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Accountability The substitute RN reports directly to the District Nurse Coordinator under the general direction of the school physician and the district appointed administrator. Nature of the Position Maintenance of cumulative health records. Administration of first aid and emergency care for ill or injured students. Vision and hearing screenings. Medication administration and documentation. Accompanying classes on field trips and, as needed, consulting 1:1 RN and LPNs assigned to medically frail students during the school day. Adherence to professional standards, New York State Nurse Practice Act, and applicable federal, state and local statutes and regulations. Compliance with school district policies and direct supervision of the Nurse Coordinator. Student Health Promotes safety and protects optimal health status of children. Observes and evaluates student injury/illness concerns and documents events. Follows established systems for medication administration and documentation; evaluates response to medication and alerts appropriate parties. Maintains the integrity and security of health information, both manual and electronic. Consults with school nurse, physician, parents, and staff to evaluate effectiveness of care. Provides emergency first aid care to staff. Maintains confidentiality of health information. Practices Universal Precautions at all times. Maintains a professional atmosphere in the health office, classroom and on field trips. Employment Per-diem RNs substitute as needed for regular health office staff absences, including RNs, LPNs and Health Office Aides, and when contacted by the school nurse to accompany classroom field trips or assist with health screenings and other office duties. Salary is non‑negotiable as per current contract.
