Practice Manager

Description Purpose of Position : The Practice Manager provides operational and people leadership for Humane Colorado’s Veterinary Hospital at CSU Spur. This role ensures operational excellence, strong employee engagement, responsible financial stewardship, and exceptional experiences for clients, patients, and the community. The community veterinary team provides compassionate, accessible, high-quality veterinary care to Denver’s underserved community and pet owners experiencing barriers to care. As the hospital’s non-medical leader, the Practice Manager serves as a visible culture champion and coach. The role partners closely with veterinary leadership to meet the mission of expanding access to veterinary care, and helping to keep pets healthy and with the families who love them. Responsibilities Leadership and Culture Manage and develop an effective staff: providing effective communication, leadership, guidance and resources. Determine staff qualifications and competency; recruit, interview, select, hire, train, orient, mentor, evaluate, coach, counsel, discipline, and reward. Establish and monitor staff safety and regulatory compliance. Lead, inspire, and develop a high-performing team through coaching, mentorship, accountability, and recognition. Foster a positive, inclusive, and mission-driven workplace culture that reflects Humane Colorado's core values. Build leadership capability among Associate Managers, Team Leaders, and emerging leaders. Establish and communicate clear expectations, provide ongoing feedback, and support employee growth and development. Address performance concerns promptly and effectively through coaching and corrective action when appropriate. Promote employee engagement, retention, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Collaborate with other departments and organizational leaders in creating organizational alignment and partnerships, executing upon organizational initiatives, supporting strategic planning, and ensuring alignment with core values, vision, mission and the strategic plan Serve as a visible and accessible leader who builds trust through transparency, consistency, and professionalism. Operations Management Direct all non-clinical daily operations of the Veterinary Hospital. Monitor hospital capacity, workflow efficiency, and resource utilization to meet community needs while maintaining a high standard of service. Collaborate with Director, Associate Managers, Team Leaders, and veterinary staff to optimize operations and service delivery. Provide exceptional customer service, effectively resolve client conflicts in high stress situations, while remaining compassionate and adapting to individual client and patient needs Lead regular staff meetings and communications to promote alignment, engagement, and accountability. Oversee facility operations and partner with Facilities and IT teams regarding maintenance, repairs, equipment, and infrastructure needs. Serve as the hospital subject matter expert for practice management software and operational systems. Manage relationships with vendors Animal Welfare and Quality Care Partner with veterinary leadership to support high-quality patient care, efficient patient flow, and positive treatment outcomes. Champion a spectrum-of-care approach to veterinary medicine, supporting patient-centered treatment plans that balance medical needs, client goals, and financial accessibility. Support a culture where patient safety, quality medicine, compassion, and animal welfare are central to all decisions. Promote Humane Colorado's commitment to increasing access to veterinary care for underserved communities. Staff Development and Training Oversee onboarding, training, competency development, and career advancement programs for hospital staff. Collaborate with Human Resources and Learning & Development partners to build effective training and professional development initiatives. Identify succession planning opportunities and support the development of future leaders. Ensure staff have the skills, resources, and support necessary to perform their roles successfully. Financial and Business Management Monitor and manage departmental budgets, expenses, and financial performance. Oversee payroll processes, patron payment programs, deposits, inventory control, and accounts payable activities. Utilize operational and financial data to evaluate program effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement. Monitor and report on key performance indicators and operational metrics. Compliance, Safety, and Risk Management Ensure compliance with OSHA, DEA, FDA, state, local, and organizational regulations and policies. Serve as the hospital leader for workplace safety and regulatory compliance initiatives. Promote a culture of safety for employees, clients, volunteers, and animals. Ensure policies, procedures, and practices support effective risk management. Education and Community Partnerships Partner with CSU Spur Education staff to support educational programming, experiential learning opportunities, and public engagement initiatives. Represents the organization internally and externally with integrity, serving as an ambassador of the mission and brand In partnership with the Veterinary Training Specialist and Human Resources, ensure a positive, structured, and meaningful experience for veterinary students, interns, externs, and other learners participating in hospital programs. Collaborate with hospital leadership and medical teams to balance educational opportunities with operational efficiency, patient care, and client service. Support recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, and evaluation processes related to interns, externs, and students. Foster a culture of teaching, mentorship, and professional development throughout the hospital. Ensure educational activities accurately represent Humane Colorado's mission, values, animal welfare standards, and commitment to accessible veterinary care. Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Veterinary Practice Management, Animal Science, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Work Experience Minimum three years of progressive leadership experience, including direct supervision of employees, in veterinary medicine, animal welfare, shelter medicine, healthcare, or a related field. Experience overseeing staffing, scheduling, performance management, employee development, and day-to-day operations to support team effectiveness and achievement of operational goals. Oversight of departmental or organizational budgets, financial performance, and key operational metrics. Special Training, Certification or Licensure: None Desired Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT, RVT, or LVT) Experience in nonprofit or community-access veterinary medicine Experience serving underserved populations Experience managing multi-service veterinary hospitals Leadership in organizations experiencing growth, organizational change, or implementation of new processes and systems. Bilingual English/Spanish Work Conditions and Physical Requirements Potentially prolonged periods of sitting and repetitive motion. May work in an area with high noise level.
