Point of Care Coordinator

The Point of Care Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of activities related to point-of-care testing (POCT), including writing procedures, training testing staff, ensuring regulatory compliance and troubleshooting POCT instruments.

Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Supervises and administers the Hospital’s Point of Care Testing Program and department Quality Management programs under the direction of the department administrative and medical directors and clinical lab managers to meet patient care and regulatory agency requirements.

2. Works with department leaders to implement new programs, monitor performance, collect and evaluate performance data, develop corrective action plans, and assist in the training and education of personnel regarding Point-of-Care testing and Quality activities. Performs technical duties within the department as required.

3. Supports the department in achieving department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, healthy work environment, and integration of intra and inter-departmental activities.

4. Ensures hospital staff are familiar with the analytical procedures, maintenance and troubleshooting of POCT equipment by designing training and competency assessment programs.

5. Collects and evaluates quality data from POCT sites and reports data collected to laboratory director, updating Quality dashboards as required.

6. Resolves technical problems and ensures that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. Ensures that all required quality control activities are performed and documented.

7. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. Document all corrective actions taken to correct problem(s). Escalates issues promptly and effectively.

8. Ensures that all required instrument maintenance and calibration activities are performed and documented. Performs periodic audits to ensure regulatory compliance.

9. Assesses records for proficiency testing samples; directs training, orientation and competency documentation for all staff involved with POCT.

10. Validate new methods and instrumentation.

11. Works collaboratively with clinical educators and clinical leaders to ensure an effective and high quality POCT Program, attending meetings and conferences as required.

12. Other related duties.

Education/Experience Required:

• MT, ASCP certified 3-5 years of clinical laboratory experience.

Or

• MT ASCP eligible and 3-5 years of clinical laboratory experience.

Or

• MLT, ASCP certified and 3-5 years of clinical laboratory experience.

• Bachelor or Associates degree in Biological Science.

• Requires strong analytical and organizational skills in order to prepare and maintain various documentation/reports, monitor activities of staff and ensure compliance with hospital policies and procedures.

• Demonstrates a high level of interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact effectively with all internal and external customers in order to maintain positive working relationships.

• Requires a full understanding of the role of laboratory support processes in assisting patient care to ensure efficient and quality POCT activities

• Able to apply CAP and Joint Commission POCT related regulatory requirements to daily processes to ensure compliance.

Registration/Certification: ASCP Certified/Eligible

Physical/Environmental Requirements:

This job requires frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. There will be occasional need for climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50 – 100 lbs and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight, touch and speech. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.

Pay Range:

$41.53 - $68.35

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. The pay range for this position is established and governed by the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Employees hired into this position will receive compensation consistent with the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
