Division Manager, HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine

Job Summary: The Division Manager (DM) of the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine will manage the administrative services of one of the largest and most complex divisions in the Department of Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG). In partnership with division physician leadership, the incumbent will develop short‑ and long‑range needs assessments, create operations policy, and facilitate effective decision‑making processes. The DM plans, organizes and directs activities to ensure operational effectiveness, including financial management, faculty and staff administration, clinical operations, research administration, IT services, and space and facilities management. The incumbent also administers financial relationships with the Department of Medicine, other UCSF departments and divisions, and key external partners. Reporting to the Division Chief and ZSFG DOM Director of Administration, the DM delegates assignments to subordinate managers and represents the Division Chief with delegated decision‑making authority. Department Overview The Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine at UCSF is the largest division within the Department of Medicine at ZSFG and is internationally recognized for clinical care, research and education. It is the top facility in the country for AIDS care and research, with approximately 34 faculty members and 202 academic, trainee, and staff employees. The Division has an annual budget of roughly $66 million and supports a large NIH portfolio. Responsibilities Operations management of personnel and faculty, program operations, clinical operations, educational programs, IT services, and facilities. Financial direction, including clinical and research contracts and grants administration. Develop and implement policies for financial management, strategic planning, organizational development, clinical practice management, and HR management. Coordinate with the Division Chief and other UCSF units to align divisional goals with institutional priorities. Provide regular reports on financial performance, operational metrics, and project status to senior leadership. Oversee capital projects and space/facilities management ensuring compliance with UCSF and regulatory standards. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in business, health care or related field and/or equivalent experience encompassing financial management, strategic planning and organizational development, clinical practice management, and human resource management. Minimum five years of progressively responsible academic and financial management experience. Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, human resources and risk management planning, accounting and payroll. Experience hiring and managing high‑performing employees. Demonstrated willingness to adopt and effectively leverage AI technologies to improve efficiency and workflows. Knowledge of common organizational and specialty computer applications. Strong ability to contribute to and elevate a culture of professionalism, respect, and integrity. Ability to work in a fluid and ambiguous environment with evolving priorities. Independent and critical thinking paired with strong teamwork and judgment in prioritization and escalation decisions. Excellent problem‑solving skills, including the ability to evaluate complex issues and identify multiple resolution options. Proficient at establishing metrics for departmental and employee goals. Excellent interpersonal, conflict‑management and persuasive communication skills. Strong project management skills, including management of capital projects. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience and/or advanced proficiency in using AI technologies, preferably within an academic medical center or healthcare environment. Familiarity with federal, state, and private contracting policies, HIPAA, Joint Commission, CMS, Medicare reimbursement policies, GAAP, UCSF purchasing guidelines, A‑21 cost accounting standards, staff personnel policies, labor relations/bargaining unit contracts and agreements. Knowledge of ACGME and non‑ACGME training program policies, institutional guidelines for salary setting for trainees, stipend payments, and trainee appointment processes.
