The Assistant Outreach Director works collaboratively with the Outreach Director to coordinate, implement, and promote Kawerak’s corporate communications, public outreach, and stakeholder engagement efforts. This position performs substantially the same outreach, communications, and public engagement functions while working under the direction of the Outreach Director and assisting in coordinating priorities and workload to help ensure continuity of operations and consistent delivery of outreach and communications activities. The Assistant Outreach Director collaborates with leadership, program staff, tribal partners, and external stakeholders to strengthen organizational visibility, foster strategic partnerships, and support Kawerak’s mission, programs, and services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for coordination and management of corporate communications to the public and stakeholders and the dissemination of information regarding Kawerak and Kawerak’s stance on issues.
- Work closely with Kawerak programs to coordinate, develop, and maintain public communication and outreach for Kawerak through the development of effective outreach strategies.
- Work with the Program Directors of each department to develop and implement press releases, coordinate outreach activities to clients and stakeholders, and utilize other forms of media, including social media, to communicate information about Kawerak’s programs and initiatives.
- Promote Kawerak services by publicizing programs, information about the board of directors, staff, and corporate activities. Assist with content creation of internal documents for events to ensure consistency, language/grammar and outward appearance of print and digital communication.
- Produce and distribute Kawerak’s public information newsletter; develop articles, solicit and obtain photographs and advertisements.
- Maintain updates to corporate website as requested or needed.
- Maintain and update social media platforms for the corporation.
- Coordinate consistent corporate letterhead, program brochures, business cards, and other branding mechanisms used for business purposes.
- Produce corporate presentations to include corporation highlights, upcoming events, and information specific to each community for use in community update meetings.
- Share corporate communication strategies with staff.
- Develop promotional materials for Kawerak programs, events, and initiatives.
- Establish effective partnerships with tribes, communities, and appropriate organizations.
- Assist with development of documents and/or presentations needed for strategic communication with the public, lawmakers, partner organizations, funders, tribal leaders, and stakeholders.
- Coordinate guests and host bi-weekly radio show Suwat in collaboration with Norton Sound Health Corporation.
- Assist with planning and executing promotional and dignitary events.
- Analyze feedback to uncover opportunities to improve or enhance the program. Recommend program changes or improvements to supervisor and Administration. Implement recommended changes from concept through execution.
- Serve as liaison for media requests between external media and Kawerak staff to coordinate Kawerak’s response to media inquiries.
- Publicly recognize employees for awards obtained internally or publicly.
- Research and understand the people, tribes, and communities Kawerak serves to ensure appropriate context is applied.
- Occasionally attend evening meetings or meetings out of town, requiring time and/or travel during evenings, weekends, and holidays. Travel to outlying villages in the Bering Strait region via small commuter airlines will be required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications, broadcasting, public relations or a related field and a minimum of two (2) years of relevant corporate public relations, communications or outreach experience required. Relevant work experience may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
- No prior convictions of child abuse or domestic violence in any form.
- Must be willing and able to travel.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of public relations, communications, marketing, branding, media relations, and community outreach principles and practices.
- Knowledge of effective written, verbal, and visual communication techniques.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, website content management systems (CMS), Canva, social media platforms, and other digital communications tools.
- Strong writing, editing, proofreading, presentation, and public speaking skills.
- Strong organizational, project management, and time management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple projects, deadlines, and events simultaneously.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, tribal leaders, partner organizations, community members, media representatives, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to develop, coordinate, and implement communication strategies, outreach initiatives, promotional materials, and public information campaigns.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality when appropriate, and represent Kawerak professionally in public settings.
- Ability to work independently, adapt to changing priorities, and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
- Knowledge of the Bering Strait Region, Alaska Native communities, and culturally responsive communication practices preferred.

- Occasionally bend, reach, and lift or carry materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds for meetings, events, and outreach activities.
- Ability to travel, including travel to rural Alaska communities using small commuter aircraft and other modes of transportation, as required to support outreach, meetings, events, and organizational initiatives.
