Position Summary

The Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor provides counseling, education, and structured support services to individuals experiencing substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. This role facilitates group counseling sessions, supports treatment planning, and assists clients in developing the skills needed for long-term recovery and stability.

The ideal candidate is compassionate, reliable, and experienced in addiction treatment, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to support clients in a structured clinical environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Services

• Facilitate psychoeducational and process groups focused on addiction recovery and relapse prevention
• Support development and implementation of individualized treatment plans
• Conduct client screenings, assessments, and ongoing progress evaluations
• Provide relapse prevention education and recovery-focused skill building
• Support clients in developing coping strategies and healthy life skills
• Monitor and report client progress to clinical team

Documentation & Compliance

• Complete clinical documentation accurately and within required timelines
• Maintain progress notes, treatment updates, and case records in EHR systems
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA, facility policies, and regulatory standards
• Maintain confidentiality and professional ethical standards

Collaboration & Teamwork

• Work closely with therapists, case managers, nurses, and medical staff
• Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings and case reviews
• Coordinate care with internal and external providers as needed
• Support discharge planning and continuity of care

Client Support & Engagement

• Build supportive therapeutic relationships with clients
• Assist clients during crisis situations using approved de-escalation techniques
• Encourage engagement in treatment and recovery activities
• Promote a safe, structured, and recovery-focused environment

Qualifications

Required

• Experience working in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment or behavioral health settings
• Knowledge of addiction recovery principles and evidence-based practices
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment
• High school diploma or equivalent required

Preferred

• Experience in residential, outpatient, IOP, or PHP programs
• Experience working with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
• Familiarity with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems
• Crisis intervention or de-escalation experience
• Bilingual abilities (a plus)

Salary & Compensation

• $20 – $30 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
