NDT Inspector J1-J4

Position Title: NDT Inspector J1–J4 General Dynamics NASSCO (General Dynamics Marine Systems) is a proud shipbuilder located in Norfolk, Virginia. This role is part of the Quality Assurance department. Hours are Monday-Friday 0600-1445. Shift: ALL Security Clearance: No Clearance Essential Functions and Purpose Performs predetermined methods, operations, setups, and prescribed specifications for QA inspections and tests required to substantiate conformance to drawings, specifications, and contract requirements. Conducts surveillance audits in all phases and stages during ship repair. Position Demands – Education / Training Technical/Associate Degree, preferably QA/Marine‑related or equivalent. 4 to 6 years of Quality Assurance inspection experience or equivalent trade related. Certified as a Non‑Destructive Test Inspector Level II (includes VT, PT, MT, and UT) to NAVSEA TECHPUB requirements. If not certified, must be able to be certified if assigned these duties. Knowledge of ship construction and repair procedures including welding, structural, machinery, electrical piping, ventilation and familiarity with various measuring instruments related to inspections. Position Demands – Required Experience Ability to perform essentials of the position, including working at heights, entering tanks, voids and cofferdams to perform competent person duties. Ability to climb vertical ladders, work around moving machinery and perform tasks while using a sky climber, scissor lift and/or condor. Read and understand blueprints, military standard/specifications, Regulatory Body Requirements, and Shipbuilding Specifications. Good general knowledge of ship repair procedures and test requirements. Skilled in blueprint reading, precision instrument utilization, and technical manual interpretation. Set, self‑calibrate and use assigned testing, inspection and QA instruments. Fundamental problem‑solving skills; use basic Lean and Six Sigma principles to recommend solutions. Computer literate with knowledge of NASSCO and mainframe computer. Good written and verbal communication skills. Exercise tact, diplomacy, decisiveness, resourcefulness, and good judgment in dealing with others. OA Inspector NDT Journeyperson 4 (QA NDT Inspector) Must meet all Journeyperson QA NDT Inspector 3 requirements. Must be able to qualify as a Level II Non‑Destructive Testing Inspector in the UT shear wave within 6 months of assignment. Other NDT areas: VT, LPT, MT, and UT‑thickness readings. Proficient in reviewing and following NDT procedures, work specifications, drawings, technical manuals, and regulatory body requirements. Generate NDT reports documenting inspection results. Draft and submit required reports and Condition Found Reports (CFR) as required. Identify Departures from Specification (DFS) and provide Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) to draft and submit DFS for acceptance. Conduct Correction Action Request (CAR) surveillance for close‑out. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Advanced computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite and basic Access Database and Project. Conduct NDT training to J1‑J3 NDT inspectors. Plan and manage a system for control of non‑conforming product and implement corrective and preventative action. Basic Lean and Six Sigma principles to provide recommended solutions. Perform quality system audits per contract, NAVSEA, and regulatory body requirements. Set‑up and close out jobs, including TIPs, filing for OQE records, checkpoint notifications, etc.
JOURNEYPERSON 3 (QA NDT INSPECTOR)
Must meet all Journeyperson QA NDT Inspector 2 requirements. Qualify as Level II Non‑Destructive Testing Inspector in MT, UT thickness readings within 3 months of assignment and fully qualified as Level II VT and LPT NDT Inspector. Proficient in reviewing and following NDT procedures. Generate NDT reports documenting inspection results. Read and interpret T&I Plan, and attached applicable OQE. Knowledge of RCC, ESR, CFR or other work authorizing documents. Identify Departures from Specification (DFS) when required. Subject Matter Expert for conducting QA inspections. Write, submit, and answer Corrective/Preventative Action Request (CAR/PAR). Good computer skills and knowledge of MS Office. Exercise tact, diplomacy, decisiveness, resourcefulness, and good judgment in dealing with others. Conduct training to J1‑J2 ship repair inspectors. Basic knowledge of Quality System Audit requirements. Perform job within appropriate time frame without on‑site supervisor. Surveillance of shipboard production processes for safety, environmental, and work practice compliance. Identify defects and appropriate corrective actions. Knowledge of quality assurance principles and quality techniques.JOURNEYPERSON 2 (QA NDT INSPECTOR)
Meet all Journeyperson QA NDT Inspector Ship Repair 1 requirements. Qualify as Level II Non‑Destructive Testing Inspector in VT and LPT within 1 month. Review NDT procedures, work specifications, drawings, and technical manuals. Generate NDT reports. Maintain quality records to demonstrate conformance. Provide guidance and training to J1 inspectors. Knowledge of RCC, ESR, CFR, DFS. CAR/PAR knowledge. Determine quality of work performed by other trades. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ensure QA inspection equipment is calibrated and certified. Identify problems and discuss solutions. Perform job with minimal supervision. Identify questionable workmanship and seek guidance. Read and interpret blueprints and drawings. Report non‑conformances using the NCR process. Basic knowledge of Process Control Procedure/CWP requirements. Good problem‑solving skills. WAF trained.JOURNEYPERSON 1 (QA NDT INSPECTOR)
Entry Level Non‑Destructive Testing Trainee. Acquire NDT Level II VT inspector qualification within 3 months. Basic Microsoft applications knowledge. Research applicable NAVSEA Standard Items, OSHA standards, and regulations. Basic knowledge of Test and Inspection Plan. Good verbal and written communication skills. Assist with conducting in‑process inspections. Conduct in‑work process surveillances. Knowledge of ship repair procedures and various trades. Basic knowledge of quality assurance principles. Learn Process Control Procedure/CWP requirements. Work in all inspection locations (tanks, voids, cofferdams, elevated). Good housekeeping skills. Understand marine chemist certificate. Take care of tools and equipment. Know appropriate PPE. Identify safety hazards. Perform job safely. Navigate a ship and understand compartment designation. Knowledge of WAF Requirements. OSHA 10‑hour trained or willing to train. Rapid Gate access or eligible to obtain. Proficient in English reading, writing, speaking. Physical Requirements Must be able to perform tasks such as carrying, lifting, walking, climbing, pulling, and other physical activities necessary for the job. Must pass a Standard Test chart for near vision acuity reading J1 letters or equivalent and a color vision test using Ishihara’s Test. Working Relationships Reports to QA Supervisor or QA Manager. Maintains internal contact with Receiving, Safety and Production. External contact includes sub‑contractors and government or Navy personnel. Must be a team player. Principal Responsibilities Witnesses or performs and documents (I), (V) and (G) point inspections and other tests at key points in the work process. Creates written records to document inspection results and provide supporting documentation to the Test and Inspection plan. Ensures all QA inspection equipment is calibrated and certified under the company’s calibration process/programs. Uses various measuring devices. Evaluates results from tests and inspections to determine acceptability. Has authority to accept, reject or rework defective or malfunctioning units per procedures; responsible for managing OQE documentation. Responsible for receipt inspections. Applies testing criteria per applicable specifications or standards and evaluates results. Conducts in‑process inspections to ensure correct materials, proper fabrication and installation procedures during production. Monitors and surveillances of shipboard production processes for compliance to standards. Researches standards and specification requirements to develop monitoring/surveillance plans. Organizes and reports test results. Performs specialized inspections. Reports work in‑process observations/surveillances/audits to provide an overview of adherence to work specifications and effectiveness of the Quality Management System. Performs non‑destructive testing and critical coating inspections as required by specifications, NAVSEA Standard Items, process control procedures or other technical documentation. Reviews work specification items, drawings, technical manuals, NAVSEA Standard Items or other contract documentation to ensure all testing and inspection requirements are identified or captured.
