Associate – State & Local Tax (SALT)

San Francisco or Sacramento, CA | Hybrid

Direct Counsel is representing an AmLaw 100 firm seeking a 2nd–6th year Associate to join its nationally recognized State & Local Tax (SALT) Practice in either its San Francisco or Sacramento office.

About the Role

This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney interested in state and local tax controversies, tax litigation, and tax counseling . The practice handles sophisticated matters involving businesses, financial institutions, multinational corporations, and high-net-worth individuals.

Responsibilities

• Advise clients on state and local tax planning and controversies
• Handle audit defense and state/local administrative proceedings
• Represent clients in tax appeals and litigation , including complex multi-jurisdictional matters
• Counsel clients on transactional tax issues , business restructuring, and tax-advantaged strategies
• Work on matters involving mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures, real estate, finance, and other corporate transactions
• Collaborate with attorneys across multiple practice areas and jurisdictions
• Potentially work with government and legislative professionals on state and local tax matters

Qualifications

• 2–6 years of legal experience
• Strong academic credentials from a top law school
• Excellent legal writing, research, advocacy, and analytical skills
• California Bar admission required
• Strong interest in federal and state tax controversies
• LL.M. in Taxation from a top law school preferred, but not required
• Property tax experience preferred
• Prior experience with a state or federal government agency or court is a plus
• Ability to manage sophisticated matters in a fast-paced, collaborative environment

Compensation & Benefits

$215,000–$390,000/year , depending on experience and other factors.
