AVAILABLE POSITIONS Police Officer I/II positions within the Police Department. Candidates must possess P.O.S.T. Certification and have completed the POST Academy. SUMMARY Under general supervision, performs routine to complex duties for Police Officer class including protection of public health, safety, and welfare, and enforcement of applicable federal, state and local laws; learns policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; performs related duties as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Police Officer I is the entry-level position in this class responsible for the full scope and responsibility of assigned work, under direct supervision. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Police Officer II by the latter's completion of a one-year probationary period. The Police Officer II is the journey level position in this class responsible for the full scope and responsibility of assigned work, under general supervision. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Police Officer I by the completion of a one-year probationary period and from the next higher classification of Police Officer III by the latter's responsibility for the more difficult and complex tasks and the performance of coordination and oversight responsibilities for a designated beat. SALARY $94,003.10 - $140,829.10 annually DOE. SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED General supervision is provided by a Police Sergeant or higher level management staff. No supervision is exercised unless serving as a member of the Field Training Program. Police Officer II may provide technical supervision to on police calls in the field to lower level officers. RESPONSIBILITIES Patrol assigned areas by car, foot, motorcycle or other methods as may be appropriate. Respond to questions, concerns and requests for service from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve complaints. Perform investigations and take appropriate action in cases of law violations. Preserve law and order; prevent and discover the commission of crime; enforce regulations and laws. Apprehend lawbreakers. Obtain and process evidence; trace persons and vehicle involvement in accidents or violations of law. Takes written statements; clears accident scenes; prepares required reports; testifies in court; maintain investigative records. Assist other agencies as required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Police Officer I: A high school diploma, or the equivalent. Police Officer II: A high school diploma, or the equivalent. Requires completion of the one-year probationary period as a Police Officer I for the City of Oxnard. LICENSE Depending on assignment, some positions may require: Possession of a valid unrestricted class C California driver's license. CERTIFICATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Possession of a Basic Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). Bilingual Spanish/English speaking skills are highly desired. PRE-APPENDMENT REQUIREMENTS Prior to appointment all candidates must pass a thorough background investigation and will be required to undergo a polygraph test, psychological evaluation and medical examination. Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions. City staff may be required to play an active role in the event of an emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours. The list of qualified candidates that is established from this recruitment may be used to fill other full-time, part-time, and temporary assignments as vacancies arise. This position requires a twelve-month probationary period. Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.
