Prison Officer - HMP Stocken Starting salary: £38,816 per annum (39‑hour week; includes 20% unsocial). Location: Melton Mowbray / Leicester / Peterborough, Midlands. Vacancy type: Merit. Role Overview Prison officers protect the public and help make an impact on prisoners’ lives. The role is fast‑paced and varies from peace‑keeping to counselling and teaching. You will build constructive, positive and professional relationships with prisoners and work as part of a team to keep the prison safe. Teamwork is vital – you will support colleagues, act as one team and work various shifts, including weekends. Key responsibilities Protect and maintain public safety within the prison. Build and maintain positive relationships with prisoners. Provide counselling or teaching support as required. Work shifts that may include evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays. Qualifications & Requirements Applicants must: Be at least 18 years old. Meet Civil Service nationality requirements. Pass a medical and fitness assessment (including eyesight and hearing). Meet the required eyesight standards with and without corrective lenses. Have a suitable standard of hearing without hearing aids. When applying to a high‑security (Category A) prison, have lived in the UK for the last 3 years. Ensure they have and maintain the legal right to live and work in the Civil Service and United Kingdom. Essential skills Communication and influencing skills. Commitment to quality. Care and understanding. Nationality Requirements Nationals of the Republic of Ireland. Nationals of Commonwealth countries with the right to work in the UK. Nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, and family members of those nationalities who have a valid application for settled or pre‑settled status under the EUSS. Individuals with limited leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain who applied for EUSS on or before 31 December 2020. Turkish nationals and certain family members of Turkish nationals who have accrued the right to work in the Civil Service. Travel to work Some prisons are located in rural areas with limited public transport. A driving licence and own transport are beneficial but not essential. Pay & Benefits 37 hours a week = £36,928 per annum. 39 hours a week = £38,816 per annum. 41 hours a week = £41,334 per annum. 25 days annual holiday (increasing to 30 days after 10years). Paid time off for public holidays and one additional privilege day. Civil Service pension with employer contributions of 28.97%. Cycle to work scheme, travel loans and other benefits. Assessment process Applicants will complete online tests (judgment, numerical and values‑based) followed by an online assessment centre. Successful candidates will be added to a merit list; offers will be made when positions become available. Medical & Fitness Applicants will undergo an eyesight test, hearing test and basic health screening, including blood pressure examination. Assessments must be completed within the UK.
