CCS Operations Intern for Carpentry, Furniture, Grounds, General Services, Painting, or Plumbing
Non-Exempt
Current high school student 16 years of age or older and enrolled in one of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs from CCS.
Reports to: Executive Director/Coordinator of CTE and direct internship supervisor.
Job Goal: To perform a variety of work activities related to the construction and maintenance of school facilities in order to enhance the instructional environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Carpentry:
Works under the guidance of a skilled carpenter to assist with all general carpentry work, to include rough and finish carpentry, cabinetry, masonry, cement work, portable classroom installation, glazing floor repair, sheetrock work and bleacher, locker, ceiling tile, door, lock, hardware, venetian blind installation and repair, bathroom partition installation and repair, etc. Under the guidance of a carpenter, works in a woodworking shop or with a small group of carpenters in the repair, alteration and construction of a myriad of school building and grounds projects. Keeps the carpenter supplied with tools and materials. Cleans the work area, machines and equipment. Possesses knowledge of various types and characteristics of carpentry materials. Possesses working knowledge of the techniques, methods, tools and safety precautions of the carpentry trade. Develops increasing skills in the roofing trade through observation and experience. Receives training and experience with handheld non-mechanical tools, such as a screwdriver, hammer, wrench, etc. No power-driven tools will be utilized by the intern at any time. Intern may observe the foreman of the proper use of all power-driven tools used on any worksite. Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned. Serves as team player and role model for other employees in the organization; demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, being customer driven, and valuing fairness.
Furniture:
Stocks furniture in the warehouse when received by shipping. Assists with warehouse organization. Assists foremen and team with loading trucks and moves furniture from the warehouse to schools and offices upon request. Relocates furniture within schools to assist other trades in the construction and renovation of facilities. Picks up discarded furniture from schools and distributes as advised. Works with furniture suppliers to set up new facilities. Moves furniture and other items to schools and public areas for special use. Repairs furniture as needed. Coordinates work with other trades as necessary. Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned. General Services/Supply:
Assists with filling, checking off, and delivering supply orders to all schools. Assists with delivering all items as directed to schools or to the appropriate building. Assists with moving office equipment and furniture from one location to another location along with the pickup of discarded equipment at the schools. Assists with handling delivery of kitchen equipment and food commodities. Assists with accepting deliveries at the warehouse and unloading delivery trucks. Assists with delivering textbooks, equipment, or any other items that must be delivered. Assists with performing with proficiency and instruction as needed. Assists with maintaining a clean vehicle. Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned. Grounds:
Observes the foreman who operates a truck to haul such items as maintenance materials, trash, freight, furniture and passengers. Follows a routine delivery route and/or follows detailed oral or written instructions. Performs grounds maintenance duties such as trimming, pruning, raking, shoveling and hand digging to complete work assignment while wearing all of the proper PPE. Possesses knowledge of various types and characteristics of grounds maintenance materials and equipment. Possesses working knowledge of safe road practices, proper loading methods and general knowledge of the techniques, methods, and safety precautions of the grounds trade. Assists the foreman with making minor repairs and service to trucks. Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned. Painter:
Works under the direct supervision of a skilled painter to perform duties such as smoothing surfaces; painting, varnishing and staining; removing old finish from surfaces; filling holes, cracks and joints; spreading drop clothes and covering windows and door frames; erecting scaffolding, etc. Keeps the journeyman supplied with non-power-driven tools and materials. Cleans work area, machines and equipment. Performs routine tasks as needed. Develops increasing skills in the painting trade. Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned. Serves as team player and role model for other employees in the organization; demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, being customer driven, and valuing fairness.
Plumbing:
Works under the guidance of a skilled licensed plumber to perform specific or general duties. Keeps the journeyman supplied with tools and materials. Cleans work area, machines and equipment. Observes foreman digging trenches and cutting flooring, pavement, and concrete as necessary to install or repair hydraulic lines. Performs routine tasks as needed. Develops increasing skills in plumbing trade through observation and experience. Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties. Receives training and experience with handheld non-mechanical tools, such as a screwdriver, hammer, wrench, etc. No power-driven tools will be utilized by the intern at any time. Intern may observe the foreman of the proper use of all power-driven tools used on any worksite. Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned. Physical Requirements:
Carpentry:
The employee must be able to demonstrate the following physical demands to safely and productively perform the essential functions of the Carpenter position. The job requires constant material/tool handling, standing/walking on even and uneven grade, and work from below grade to overhead; frequent pushing/pulling and operating of non-power-driven equipment; and occasional sitting. The employee must be able to lift/carry 15 lbs. or less constantly, 25 lbs. or less frequently and 50 to 100 lbs. occasionally. The employee must be able to tolerate the above job demands on a regular schedule and as assigned. Steel-toed shoes are required along with the proper clothing requirements set forth by the department foreman.
Furniture:
The employee must be able to demonstrate the following physical demands to safely and productively perform the essential functions of the Furniture/Warehouse position. The job requires constant standing/walking, material handling, and work from knuckle to chest level; frequent work from floor to knuckle level, pushing and pulling; occasional climbing, sitting, work above shoulder level, and tool use. The employee must be able to lift/carry 15 lbs. constantly, 50 lbs. frequently and 112 lbs. occasionally. The employee must be able to tolerate the above job demands on a regular schedule and as assigned. Steel-toed shoes are required along with the proper clothing requirements set forth by the department foreman.
General Services/Supply:
Must have finger dexterity and be able to perform the basic operational life functions of walking, talking, hearing, stooping, kneeling, standing, sitting, crouching, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform very heavy lifting exerting in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to work with data and figures, and distinguish colors. Steel-toed shoes are required along with the proper clothing requirements set forth by the department foreman.
