Job Overview

The role requires a solid understanding of respiratory care to effectively serve diverse patient populations, utilizing techniques that align with their chronological, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. The respiratory care provided is based on physician orders and adheres to established standards and protocols.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the achievement of departmental goals while following policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety regulations.
  • Conduct assessments of patients' physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural dimensions, as well as their educational needs, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Administer a variety of respiratory therapy treatments and services, including but not limited to:
    • Application, operation, monitoring, and management of respiratory equipment.
    • Oxygen therapy, mixed gases, and humidity management.
    • Ventilator support (both invasive and non-invasive).
    • Bronchial hygiene and lung expansion techniques.
    • Spirometry testing, EKG monitoring, and blood gas analysis.
  • Utilize therapeutic communication, interviewing techniques, problem-solving skills, and crisis intervention strategies during patient care.
  • Review electronic medical records and physician orders throughout the shift.
  • Engage in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), maintaining airways and providing oxygen and ventilation through various devices, as well as performing closed chest cardiac massage.
  • Enhance workflow efficiency by monitoring interdepartmental systems and processes, adhering to departmental policies, and suggesting improvements as necessary.
  • Perform additional duties relevant to the role, recognizing that the responsibilities listed are not exhaustive.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and standards.
  • Utilize organizational resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Refer to competency validation documents for the populations served when applicable.
Minimum QualificationsEducation
  • Associate’s degree from an AMA-accredited respiratory care program (AAS Degree or higher required).
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related healthcare field is preferred.
Experience
  • Less than one year of acute care experience; registry eligibility is required.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) in Maryland and/or the District of Columbia, based on hospital location.
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) is required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the NBRC is preferred.
  • Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification (including BLS and NRP) from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross, to be obtained within 90 days.
  • Additional unit or specialty certifications may vary by department.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and other relevant certifications (e.g., NRP, PALS) must be obtained within one year if required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of human respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathology as they relate to respiratory care.
  • Familiarity with the operation of respiratory care equipment and its clinical applications.
  • Aptitude for assessing hazardous conditions related to respiratory care and implementing corrective measures.
  • Ability to work with patients across all age groups, from neonates to geriatrics.
  • Capacity to remain composed and effective in high-pressure situations.
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals.
Compensation

The position offers a salary range of USD $35.68 - USD $64.71 per hour.
