PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN III/CORRECTIONAL HEALTH

Position Overview Psychiatric Technician III – Emergency position under the Department of Justice Consent Decree to improve mental health care in Los Angeles County jails. Open Competitive – EMERGENCY. Exam number Y8163B-DOJ. First day of filing July 26, 2024, 9:00 a.m., PT. Applicant may transition to permanent county employment after an initial period of up to 90 days. Full‑time position, with 20% recruitment and retention bonus for those working on site at a designated facility. Essential Job Functions Interview client, family members, or friends to obtain information about client’s environment, personality, and family relationships that may affect treatment. Makes program services referrals for persons identified as mentally ill. Coordinates or conducts auditing of client records for compliance with documentation guidelines. Participates in multidisciplinary team conferences, provides and documents continuing care and information, and collaborates with other mental‑health staff to develop effective treatment plans. Within the scope of practice guidelines, provides direct client care, completes required documentation, updates the treatment team on client progress, and provides referrals and linkage to community resources. Provides consultation to community agencies on utilization of mental‑health and support services. Provides in‑service training to staff and volunteers on identification and treatment of mentally disordered individuals, crisis intervention, and management of assaultive behavior. Administers prescribed medications orally or by injection to clients in acute psychiatric settings. Participates as a Crisis Response Team member in an inpatient psychiatric setting. Coordinates activities of a Psychiatric Mobile Response Team with law‑enforcement, courts, schools, and other agencies to assist and evaluate clients deemed a danger to self or others. Serves as a Homeless Outreach and Engagement Team member, providing initial assessments in the field and linking homeless mentally ill to mental‑health services. Coordinates work of psychiatric technicians or others to deliver services at inpatient or outpatient facilities. Coordinates or develops psychological rehabilitation programs for the chronically and persistently mentally ill. Leads and provides technical supervision to lower‑level psychiatric technicians and support staff at inpatient or outpatient facilities. Serves as mental‑health service gatekeeper at the Mental Health ACCESS and Telecommunications Center, triaging caller requests, referring to appropriate treatment, and dispatching a psychiatric mobile response team as needed. Prepares and signs the application for immediate 72‑hour detention of disturbed psychiatric clients when required. Requirements Minimum of two (2) years of experience at the level of Psychiatric TechnicianII in Los Angeles County, defined as actively participating with professional staff in delivery of mental‑health services or indirect and direct patient care to mentally ill or emotionally disturbed clients. License Requirements A valid and active license as a Psychiatric Technician issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (search.dca.ca.gov). A valid California Class “C” driver’s license, or alternative transportation method, is required for job‑related essential functions. Physical Requirements Physical class 4 – “Arduous”; involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 lb., with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; may require extraordinary physical activity. Special Requirement Information Experience at the level of Psychiatric TechnicianII in Los Angeles County defined as actively participating with professional staff in delivery of mental‑health services or indirect and direct patient care to mentally ill or emotionally disturbed clients. Assessment Process After the initial work period, the appointing department will evaluate performance. A passing score on this evaluation will result in consideration for permanent appointment.
