Description: The emergency department is a Level 4 trauma center. It has 24 beds and 4 critical rooms, including 1 trauma room. An intake model is used for lower acuity patients. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4 for general ED and 1:2 or 1:1 for ICU patients. Travelers must have demonstrated the ability to triage. Patients are treated in a mixed holding area in the emergency department. There are 2 well-equipped psych/seclusion rooms. In-house security is available 24/7. The average number of patients treated in the emergency department daily is 80-110. Charge nurses and house supervisors are available 24/7. Emergency department techs have a ratio of 1:10-12. They perform various duties including IV skills, phlebotomy, and wound care. Paramedics help in the intake area with additional responsibilities. Respiratory therapists are available for urgent intubation, vent setup, and breathing treatments. Registered nurses may start breathing treatments when necessary. All beds have telemetry monitoring capabilities. Registered nurses are responsible for reading their own cardiac strips. X-ray and CT transport their own patients. Both phlebotomists and registered nurses draw labs as the situation demands. Block scheduling is permitted but no more than 4 consecutive shifts. Every other weekend is required for shifts. Holiday shifts are negotiable but may require working some major holidays. On-call shifts are included in the schedule. Registered nurses may float between emergency departments as required. The dress code consists of navy blue scrubs.
