Job Title: Staff Attorney Program: Oceans Employment Type: Salary (exempt – not eligible for overtime) Work Arrangement: Full-time, regular; remote (preferred location: California, DC, or Gulf Coast) Reports To: Oceans Program Director Salary Range: $72,500 - $89,500 Bargaining Unit: Yes POSITION SUMMARY The Staff Attorney will work as part of a team using law and advocacy to address threats to marine wildlife and habitat. The attorney will focus on offshore drilling, holding agencies and operators accountable for oil and gas pollution impacts, and will advance rapid phase‑out and cleanup initiatives. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Develop and litigate cases in state and federal court targeting offshore oil and gas to protect marine species and habitats. Build relationships with policy leaders, conservation organizations, and frontline communities to advance phase‑out and clean‑up initiatives. Advocate for administrative and legislative policies through scientific and legal comments, oral testimony, policy analysis, rule‑making petitions, and communications. Communicate with media, decision‑makers, the public, allies and opinion leaders through writing, outreach, and public speaking. Develop expertise in technical aspects of energy policy, oil production and decommissioning obligations, corporate environmental accountability law, and regulatory bodies. Investigate and monitor offshore drilling activities to ensure compliance with regulations. Perform other project work and job‑related duties as required. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS Law school graduate and member of the California, District of Columbia, or other relevant bar. At least three years of civil litigation experience, environmental law preferred. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, project management, and initiative. Excellent writing, communication, research, and oral advocacy skills. Strong work ethic, time management, and ability to manage a busy docket. Proactive approach to identifying opportunities and solving problems. Ability to develop cases and manage a full docket. Ability to work independently and as part of an effective team. Ability to work in cross‑cultural settings with competency in diversity and inclusion. Demonstrated commitment to wildlife and environmental protections. Availability to work 40+ hours per week. WORKING CONDITIONS This position is remote but requires travel for meetings, site visits, public speaking, and court appearances. Standard schedule Monday–Friday with some night and weekend work as needed. PHYSICAL & LOCATION REQUIREMENTS Job requires extensive computer work, typing and reading. Occasional walking, standing, light lifting (0–25 lbs), and driving. Work may involve outdoor conditions and travel to remote sites.
