Java / Camunda Developer – Workflow & Performance Engineering
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Java / Camunda Developer with strong hands-on Java development skills and deep experience working with Camunda workflow engines in high-volume, production environments .
The ideal candidate will be comfortable answering fundamental Java coding and architecture questions, understand Java 8 features , and have solid knowledge of Oracle and Hibernate/JPA . The most important aspect of this role is the ability to analyze, tune, and scale Camunda to support extremely high workflow and transaction volumes.
The environment processes approximately 100,000 workflows per day and may require the platform to support up to one million transactions . The developer will be expected to assess the existing Camunda implementation, identify performance bottlenecks, and implement tuning and scalability improvements.
Key Responsibilities
Camunda Workflow Engineering
- Develop, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize Camunda-based workflow applications .
- Analyze existing Camunda architecture, workflows, database interactions, and application performance.
- Tune Camunda for high-volume processing and scalability.
- Analyze strategies for handling 100,000+ process workflows per day .
- Design and implement solutions capable of supporting up to one million transactions .
- Identify and resolve workflow engine bottlenecks, including issues related to:
- Process execution
- Job Executor configuration
- Database performance
- Transaction management
- Concurrency
- Thread utilization
- Process history
- Indexing
- Query performance
- Evaluate workflow design and determine opportunities to improve throughput and reduce processing time.
- Monitor production performance and recommend ongoing Camunda optimization strategies.
- Work directly with the Camunda platform and development teams to troubleshoot and tune the environment.
Java Development
- Develop and maintain enterprise applications using Java .
- Demonstrate strong understanding of core Java concepts and object-oriented programming.
- Write clean, efficient, maintainable Java code.
- Troubleshoot application performance and coding issues.
- Understand Java 8 features , including:
- Lambda expressions
- Streams
- Functional interfaces
- Optional
- Default/static interface methods
- Method references
- Java 8 date/time APIs
- Participate in code reviews and technical discussions.
Oracle / Database
- Work with Oracle databases supporting Camunda and Java applications.
- Understand relational database concepts, SQL, transactions, joins, indexes, and query optimization.
- Troubleshoot database performance issues that impact workflow processing.
- Understand how high-volume workflow execution affects database performance and scalability.
- Analyze database queries and identify opportunities for optimization.
Hibernate / JPA
- Strong understanding of the relationship between Java, Hibernate/JPA, and Oracle .
- Understand how Java objects are mapped to relational database tables.
- Demonstrate knowledge of:
- Entity mapping
- Relationships
- One-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many mappings
- Primary/foreign keys
- Transactions
- Lazy vs. eager loading
- Persistence operations
- Understand how application code creates, reads, updates, and deletes data in Oracle through Hibernate/JPA.
- Troubleshoot ORM-related performance issues such as excessive queries, inefficient fetching, and transaction problems.
Camunda Scalability & Performance – Critical Requirement
This position requires someone who has actually tuned Camunda in a high-volume environment , not simply someone who has used Camunda to create basic BPMN workflows.
The candidate should be able to discuss:
- How would you tune Camunda when processing 100K workflows per day ?
- How would you architect Camunda to handle one million transactions ?
- How would you identify the bottleneck when workflow throughput begins to degrade?
- How would you tune the Job Executor and thread/concurrency settings ?
- How do database indexes and query performance affect Camunda?
- How would you manage transaction boundaries and database load?
- How would you approach Camunda history and data retention at large scale?
- How would you monitor workflow execution and identify performance issues?
- How would you increase throughput without compromising transaction integrity?
- How would you troubleshoot long-running or stuck process instances?
Day-One Expectations
The selected candidate will be expected to sit with the Camunda team on Day One , understand the existing implementation, analyze the current workload and architecture, and begin identifying opportunities for Camunda performance tuning and scalability improvements .
The candidate should be capable of moving beyond theoretical knowledge and quickly analyzing:
- Current workflow architecture
- Process volumes
- Transaction throughput
- Camunda configuration
- Job Executor behavior
- Database utilization
- Oracle queries and indexes
- Hibernate/JPA interactions
- Application bottlenecks
- Workflow execution performance
Required Qualifications
- Strong hands-on Java development experience.
- Strong understanding of Java 8 features .
- Hands-on Camunda development and administration experience.
- Demonstrated experience tuning and scaling Camunda .
- Experience working with high-volume workflow/process environments .
- Strong Oracle/SQL experience.
- Strong Hibernate/JPA experience.
- Understanding of Java-to-Hibernate-to-Oracle data persistence.
- Experience troubleshooting application and database performance.
- Strong understanding of transactions, concurrency, and enterprise application architecture.
- Ability to analyze existing systems and quickly identify performance bottlenecks.
Preferred Experience
- Experience supporting 100K+ workflows/processes per day .
- Experience designing systems capable of handling 1M+ transactions .
- Experience with Camunda Job Executor and process-engine configuration.
- Experience with Spring Boot and enterprise Java applications.
- Experience with REST APIs and microservices.
- Experience with Kafka or other event-driven technologies.
- Experience with production performance monitoring and tuning.
