RN Clinical Nurse II- Surgical Observation Unit

Overview The Surgery Observation unit, in the new state‑of‑the‑art North Carolina Surgical Hospital, is a 15‑bed unit that provides care to a varied adult surgical population, including patients on observation status, extended recovery from PACU, and those awaiting an inpatient bed assignment. Staff members are challenged by the pace of the unit and the many general and specialty services they care for, such as ENT, plastics, trauma, oncology, and more. Teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration are hallmarks for this unit while providing expert “Carolina Care” to the patients and families we serve. Our ONE GREAT TEAM facilitates admissions, treatments, transfers, and discharges of patients 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Summary Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reports to and is accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director; coordinates and delivers patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting. Responsibilities Education – Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs of self, attends education programs based on identified learning needs, uses patient education materials relevant to the patient population, assesses readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers, and evaluates the patient’s developmental level and factors affecting ability to learn. Evaluation of Care – Identifies expected patient outcomes, seeks guidance as needed in revising the plan of care, participates in interdisciplinary team discussions to evaluate patient care, and communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care. Implementation – Demonstrates competence in caring for patients with complex problems, performs bedside point‑of‑care testing as required, utilizes organization and nursing standards, policies and procedures, organizes and prioritizes care, and consults timely regarding patients with complex care issues, unusual teaching needs, or high‑risk discharge planning. Leadership – Develops goals to promote professional growth, achieves goals within the identified timeframe or renegotiates with supervisor, understands inter‑departmental collaboration activities, participates in unit goal development and performance improvement activities, uses communication systems effectively, promotes cost‑effective care, gives feedback to co‑workers, and is aware of public policy and regulatory guidelines. Patient Assessment – Recognizes data from complex situations to determine care priorities, includes appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs, synthesizes assessment data into a meaningful whole prior to communication, and anticipates discharge needs of patients and families. Planning – Collaborates with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care, uses multidisciplinary resources, uses full range of communication, identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic issues in planning, and prioritizes tasks for patients with complex problems. Research – Reads nursing journals for applicable studies or articles, and brings ideas and questions to staff for assessment of applicability. Other Information Education Requirements: Graduation from a school of professional nursing. If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment and obtain a Bachelor's degree with a major in Nursing, or a Master's degree with a major in Nursing within seven years of employment. Licensure/Certification Requirements: Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification. Professional Experience Requirements: One (1) year of nursing experience.
