Job Description - Crewperson 6A-C, Mechanical Systems (13911) Crewperson 6A-C, Mechanical Systems - (13911) Job Title Crewperson 6A-C – Mechanical Systems Position Function The Mechanical Systems Crewperson is directly responsible to the Supervisor and is expected to perform assigned duties with minimal supervision while maintaining a high standard of workmanship, efficiency, initiative, and dependability. This position requires advanced knowledge and hands‑on experience in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of commercial and institutional HVACR and mechanical systems commonly found in educational facilities. The Mechanical Systems Crewperson shall possess strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrated experience working with a wide variety of HVACR equipment including, but not limited to: Air Cooled and Water Cooled Chillers Cooling Towers Variable Air Volume (VAV) Systems Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF/VRV) Systems Rooftop Units (RTUs) Dedicated Outside Air Systems (DOAS) Air Handling Units (AHUs) Unit Ventilators / Unit Vents Hot Water and Steam Boilers Pumps, Motors, and Hydronic Systems Exhaust and Supply Fan Systems Split Systems and Packaged HVACR Equipment Building Automation and Temperature Control Systems Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) Refrigeration Equipment and Refrigerant Recovery Systems The employee must demonstrate exceptional skills in diagnosing mechanical and electrical HVACR issues, fabricating and modifying sheet metal ductwork, performing preventative maintenance procedures, replacing mechanical components, and supporting facility‑wide heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration operations. This position will assist with maintaining indoor air quality, occupant comfort, energy efficiency, and operational reliability throughout district facilities. Essential Performance Responsibilities Perform troubleshooting, diagnostics, repair, and preventative maintenance on HVACR and mechanical systems including chillers, boilers, RTUs, AHUs, DOAS units, VAV boxes, VRF systems, pumps, unit ventilators, cooling towers, and VFDs Follow lockout/tagout procedures and all district safety policies when servicing mechanical equipment Inspect, maintain, and repair heating and cooling systems in schools and district facilities Replace filters, belts, bearings, motors, compressors, contactors, actuators, valves, sensors, and other HVACR components Troubleshoot low-voltage and line-voltage electrical control systems associated with HVACR equipment including VFDs Perform coil cleaning, boiler maintenance, refrigerant recovery, leak detection, and system charging procedures Troubleshoot hydronic systems, steam systems, chilled water systems, and building automation controls Assist in startup, shutdown, seasonal conversion, and operational testing of HVACR equipment Fabricate, modify, and install sheet metal ductwork and HVACR components as required Utilize refrigerant manifold gauges, recovery machines, vacuum pumps, combustion analyzers, and diagnostic instruments safely and effectively Monitor and maintain proper operation of temperature controls, VAV systems, and building automation systems Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), tablets, and digital work order systems to track work orders, preventative maintenance, and equipment history Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, and equipment documentation Ensure all work is performed in compliance with district standards, OSHA regulations, EPA refrigerant requirements, and applicable mechanical codes Maintain assigned vehicle, tools, and equipment in a safe and clean operating condition Respond to emergency HVACR/mechanical service calls as needed Work collaboratively with supervisors, coworkers, school personnel, contractors, and vendors to ensure efficient facility operations Accept responsibility for all tools, supplies, and materials assigned Attend required meetings, training sessions, and in-services Demonstrate initiative and the ability to perform assigned tasks with limited supervision Continue developing technical knowledge relating to HVACR systems, refrigerants, controls, and industry standards Travel Travel between schools, district facilities, and central offices will be required. Equipment The employee must demonstrate the ability to safely operate and maintain various tools and equipment assigned to the position. This position may require the use of iPads, tablets, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and basic office equipment including computers, copiers, scanners, and printers. Employees must comply with all USD 259 safety guidelines and operational procedures for equipment use. Equipment and tools may include, but are not limited to: Refrigerant recovery machines Combustion analyzers Recovery cylinders Welding and brazing equipment Oxygen and acetylene torches Pipe cutters and threaders ProPress equipment Electrical diagnostic meters and testing equipment Band saws, drill presses, metal shears, and metal brake machines Ladders and personnel lifts Power tools and hand tools Welding machines and sheet metal fabrication equipment Material lifts and chain falls CMMS tablets and mobile work order systems District vehicles and vans Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Extensive knowledge of commercial HVACR systems, controls, and mechanical equipment Understanding of refrigeration cycles, hydronic systems, airflow principles, and HVACR sequence of operations Ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical HVACR systems using meters, gauges, and diagnostic tools Knowledge of chillers, boilers, RTUs, AHUs, DOAS systems, VAV systems, VRF systems, pumps, cooling towers, VFDs, unit ventilators, and associated controls Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and control schematics Familiarity with refrigerants including R-22, R-410A, R-134A, and R-454B along with EPA refrigerant handling procedures Knowledge of preventative maintenance practices and predictive maintenance techniques Ability to safely operate lifts, ladders, recovery equipment, welding equipment, pipe threading tools, and sheet metal fabrication equipment Ability to utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), tablets, and digital work order systems Strong customer service, communication, and teamwork skills Ability to work independently and prioritize assignments effectively Ability to adapt to evolving HVACR technologies, refrigerants, controls, and energy management systems Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality while working with staff, vendors, and the public Employee Punctuality and Appearance Employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday unless approved leave has been granted. Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator. Employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position. Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Supervisor(s) of BGMS. Physical Requirements Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly Ability to climb ladders and work at heights Ability to work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, crawlspaces, and confined spaces Ability to work in extreme hot and cold environments Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, twist, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required Ability to work overtime and respond to emergency calls on short notice when necessary Interrelations Maintain positive working relationships with district personnel, vendors, contractors, and customers Work under the direct supervision of the department supervisor to complete daily tasks and assignments Interact with diverse populations while maintaining professionalism, tact, and diplomacy Respond appropriately to customer needs while maintaining a positive and service-oriented attitude Represent the Facilities Division and Wichita Public Schools in a professional and positive manner Qualification Profile High School Diploma or GED preferred Valid Kansas Driver’s License required throughout employment Mechanical Journeyman or Master License preferred at time of hire and must be obtained within two (2) years of employment EPA Refrigerant Certification preferred at time of hire and must be obtained within two (2) years of employment Experience with commercial/institutional HVACR systems strongly preferred Experience working with chillers, boilers, RTUs, AHUs, DOAS systems, VAV systems, VRF systems, VFDs, unit ventilators, and BAS/EMS controls preferred Experience troubleshooting low-voltage and line-voltage HVACR electrical systems preferred Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), tablets, and digital work order systems preferred #J-18808-Ljbffr
