Senior Safety Investigations & Learning Specialist

Job Summary Provides subject matter expertise with a technical focus on event learning, incident management, investigations, and near‑miss processes. Facilitates learning teams and supports Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) approach to strengthen operational learning and Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention. Performs in‑depth event analysis, identifies trends and control gaps, develops sustainable corrective actions, and partners with leaders and stakeholders to implement improvements. Essential Functions Lead end‑to‑end investigations for high‑potential and significant incidents, integrating event learning principles throughout all phases including investigation strategy, root cause analysis, documentation, reporting, and development of sustainable corrective actions to strengthen operational learning and reduce risk. Facilitate learning teams with a focus on human and organizational performance principles to support learning. Leads SIF investigations that may include a formal causal analysis and conducts event reports with executive leadership. Work in close collaboration with corporate, operations and safety leadership to develop and implement sustainable corrective actions and process improvements to prevent incidents. Facilitate regular meetings to verify timely completion of corrective actions from event learnings and maintain the corrective action log. Track and analyze high‑energy events to identify trends, direct or critical controls, and improvement opportunities. Host weekly departmental meetings to review and classify incidents according to the Safety Classification and Learning (SCL) model and maintain data accuracy in the incident management database. Manage projects associated with program implementation and maintenance, and continuous improvement initiatives. Serve as a SIF prevention advocate, presenting or training as requested on topics including HOP fundamentals, the energy wheel, high‑energy hazard identification, critical controls, and operational learning. Prepare and communicate findings from high‑value learning events across the business. Develop safety‑related communications for inclusion into daily meetings and bulletins. Support the high‑energy controls assessment process. Collaborate with stakeholders, managers, supervisors, and crew members to promote integration and adoption of SIF prevention, HOP, and event learning. Train and support additional Learning Team Facilitators. Education Requires a bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, psychology, engineering, business, or a related technical field. Experience Requires at least five (5) years of relevant work experience which may include safety, human and organizational performance, incident investigation/management, or continuous improvement. Experience utilizing recognized incident investigation and event learning methodologies such as TapRooT, ICAM, Topset, or similar root cause and operational learning frameworks, preferred. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification preferred. Physical Requirements Able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, reach, climb stairs and ladders, and poles. Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Able to demonstrate and apply manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and common office equipment. Able to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time. Able to operate a motor vehicle and drive a motor vehicle daily or for extended periods, in a safe manner, and enter/exit vehicle unassisted. Working Conditions Hybrid role based in Houston, TX. Required to participate in CenterPoint Energy's All Hazard Emergency Operation Plan (AHOP). Able to work indoors in an office environment and outdoors with occasional exposure to all weather conditions, equipment, and noise when at field installation sites. This position may require approximately 10% travel across the six‑state footprint as needed.
