Plant EHS Compliance & Risk Manager
Novolex Corporate
Job Description
Job Description
Step into the role
Picture your week: you start on the floor, side-by-side with the Plant Safety Lead Team, spotting risks before they become incidents and reinforcing safe habits. You coach high-risk focus groups—Ergonomics, Electrical Protection, Fall Protection, Mobile Equipment, and Guarding—while also guiding Storm and Waste Water Pollution Prevention and SPCC initiatives. By midweek, you’re running an internal hazard and risk assessment cycle, auditing against the strongest standards, and validating compliance across operations.
When a near miss pops up, you activate a structured root cause analysis. Fast “Incident Flash” updates go out, detailed investigations follow, and learnings are shared via conference calls or web sessions so everyone levels up together. You translate history and leading indicators into action—mining incident trends, auditing plants, processes, and equipment, observing jobs and activities, and using precise JSA and SWI documentation to eliminate high-risk scenarios. Through it all, you keep a relentless drumbeat for a zero-incident culture.
What you’ll drive- Own the development, rollout, and governance of EHS programs, procedures, policies, and standards that satisfy Federal, State, Local, and Customer requirements and align with Corporate EHS expectations.
- Provide leadership, direction, and technical depth to tactical teams (Plant Safety Lead Teams; High-Risk Teams—Ergonomics, Electrical Protection, Fall Protection, Mobile Equipment, Guarding; Storm/Waste Water Pollution Prevention; SPCC; Behavioral-Based Safety Training Team).
- Implement an internal hazard/risk assessment and compliance audit cadence to confirm adherence to best-known practices.
- Administer a disciplined root cause process to capture and apply lessons from all near misses and failures.
- Communicate incident and near-miss findings through Incident Flashes, detailed investigation reports, and live phone/web conferences.
- Institutionalize a method for identifying and eliminating high-risk exposures using historical data, leading/warning indicators, audits, observations, and detailed JSA/SWI guidance.
- Coordinate timely notifications, provide oversight, and interface with leadership and external agencies while coaching teams at every level.
- Partner closely with the HR Manager to proactively manage Workers’ Compensation cases.
- Ensure on-time, accurate environmental reporting (Air Emission Summary, TRI, Tier II, SWPPP, deviation reports, and hazardous/non-hazardous waste disposal documentation).
- Develop and publish accurate leading and lagging EHS performance metrics.
- Evaluate plant EHS linkages and advise the Plant Manager on strategies to close training, skill, or performance gaps.
- BS in Occupational Safety and Health, Mechanical/Chemical Engineering, Business/Organizational Management, or related field preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience considered.
- Professional credentials such as CIH, CSP, CPEA, or CHMM are a plus.
- 5+ years implementing EHS standards, training, and legal compliance in a manufacturing setting preferred.
- Self-starter with strong organization and multitasking skills.
- Proven change agent—adept at driving cultural adoption and sustaining change across a plant.
- Experienced in continuous improvement methods, tools, and best practices within manufacturing.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills across all organizational levels.
- Influences effectively across functions and diverse teams.
- Budget/cost management, strategic planning, and leadership experience preferred.
- Fluent with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Microsoft Teams.
