Position Summary The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia (DC) is unique in the size and the scope of its work. It serves as both the local and federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. AUSAs assigned to the Superior Court Division prosecute cases ranging from misdemeanors to homicides. AUSAs in the Criminal Division prosecute federal crimes. The Civil Division advances the interests of the U.S. in civil suits brought in the DC. Duties The Office is accepting applications for highly motivated attorneys to serve as Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) working on affirmative civil enforcement (ACE) matters in the Civil Division. ACE AUSAs investigate and bring affirmative civil actions on behalf of the United States, often involving potential violations of the False Claims Act and other federal statutes. The role requires coordination with other divisions of DOJ, federal law enforcement agencies, criminal AUSAs, and state prosecutors. Many False Claims Act cases are brought through qui tam actions, working closely with whistleblowers and their counsel from case inception through trial. Responsibilities Independently oversee investigations. Prepare subpoenas and conduct legal research. Interview witnesses, marshal evidence, and coordinate with law enforcement. Negotiate settlements and conduct depositions or examinations. Draft legal memoranda and prepare responses to written discovery. Represent the United States at trial and on appeal. Gain civil trial and appellate experience, including oral argument at the D.C. Circuit. Qualifications J.D. degree and active membership in good standing of the bar of any U.S. jurisdiction. At least one year post‑J.D. experience; a minimum of three years of post‑J.D. or other relevant experience is required. United States citizenship. Significant litigation experience, superior oral communication skills, and the ability to independently manage multiple investigations or litigations simultaneously. Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access, depending on assignment. Selection Requirements United States citizenship or nationality. Pre‑employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing. Selective Service registration if applicable. Residency in the district or within 25 miles thereof. Additional Information Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney pay is determined administratively based on years of professional attorney experience. The basic pay range is $70,442 to $171,487 or $94,350 to $197,100, which includes 33.94% locality pay. Other Benefits: The Department of Justice offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Relocation Expenses: None authorized.
