Radiation Control Technician

Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking experienced Radiation Control Technician 4 (RCT 4) professionals to support mission-critical nuclear operations and weapons production programs. This senior-level role is ideal for radiological professionals who excel in complex operational environments, provide technical leadership, and serve as trusted subject matter experts for radiological work planning and execution.

Position Overview

As a Radiation Control Technician 4 , you will perform advanced radiological protection activities while serving as a primary point of contact for planning, resource coordination, and radiological work execution. You will ensure radiological controls are properly implemented for high-hazard work, provide technical leadership to other technicians, and support safe and efficient operations within highly regulated nuclear facilities.

This role requires strong operational health physics knowledge, independent decision-making abilities, and the capability to anticipate and resolve radiological challenges in dynamic environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide senior-level radiological protection support for nuclear operations.
• Serve as the radiological controls subject matter expert for high-hazard radiological work.
• Develop and review Radiological Work Control Packages (RWCPs).
• Ensure radiological controls are properly implemented and maintained.
• Coordinate resources to support safe and efficient facility operations.
• Resolve radiological issues and escalate concerns when necessary.
• Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and oversight to Radiation Control Technicians.
• Support contamination control, exposure control, workplace monitoring, and emergency response activities.
• Work directly with operations, management, and health physics personnel to support mission execution.
• Promote excellence in safety, compliance, and operational performance.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 5 years of related Radiation Control Technician, Operational Health Physics, or Radiological Controls experience .
• Extensive experience supporting radiological activities and nuclear facilities.
• Strong knowledge of radiological work controls, contamination control, and radiation protection programs.
• Ability to independently analyze and resolve complex radiological issues.
• Demonstrated leadership experience within radiological operations.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision in high-consequence environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current or previous DOE Radiological Control Technician qualifications.
• Experience supporting DOE nuclear facilities, national laboratories, DOD nuclear programs, naval nuclear operations, commercial nuclear power, or fuel cycle facilities.
• Experience developing or reviewing Radiological Work Control Packages (RWCPs).
• Previous leadership, lead technician, or supervisory responsibilities.
• Active or previously held DOE Q Clearance.
• Advanced Operational Health Physics experience.

Work Environment

This position supports active nuclear facilities and may require:

• Rotating shifts, weekends, and holiday coverage.
• 24/7 operational support schedules.
• Indoor and outdoor work environments.
• Use of respiratory protection and other PPE.
• Climbing ladders, navigating industrial facilities, and working in radiological controlled areas.
• Lifting up to 50 pounds and carrying up to 35 pounds.
• Working in physically demanding conditions.

U.S. Citizenship Required

Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance . This position requires successful completion of a federal background investigation and adherence to DOE security requirements.
