Position Overview

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Ambulatory Care offers strategic leadership to the medical team and outpatient services within our organization. This role is essential in guiding the team to achieve its mission, objectives, and responsibilities towards patients and the community, ensuring the delivery of high-quality and cost-effective healthcare. The CMO advocates for the enhancement of care quality, comprehensive healthcare delivery, patient experience, and safety across outpatient settings.

In this capacity, the CMO acts as an internal advisor to executive and physician leaders within the Medical Group and Physician Services division, providing strategic guidance on quality, access, productivity, physician compensation, and engagement. This includes, but is not limited to, the development of employed physician networks, succession planning, accreditation for outpatient and post-acute care, physician alignment, collaborative models, patient-centered care, clinical integration, and accountable care. The CMO will maintain ongoing communication with the Clinical Integration Network (CIN) of our organization, offering clinical and physician leadership in population health and alternative payment model strategies.

Additionally, the CMO will support system-level and local initiatives aimed at redesigning care models to achieve the triple aim of healthcare for accountable populations. Collaborating with the Chief Health Information Officer (CHIO), the CMO will focus on clinical process redesign, clinical informatics, and the effective use of enabling technologies such as TogetherCare (Epic) within the medical group and CIN division. The role also involves fostering discussions and partnerships with physician leaders to enhance clinical quality indicators and outcomes. The CMO will be a vital member of the senior management team of the Medical Group.

Reporting Structure

The CMO will report in a matrix format to both the CEO of our organization and the Senior Vice President of Medical Groups & Ambulatory Services. In all responsibilities, the CMO is expected to network, build consensus, collaborate, and solve problems effectively. This position is crucial for implementing strategic and operational plans, developing service lines, and focusing on physician relationships and service line growth. These initiatives will be executed through established and revised medical staff structures, committees, and collaborative meetings with the CEO and Executive Team.

  • Support the formal medical staff functions at all facilities, potentially chairing committees and assisting with complex medical staff decisions.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited medical school and completion of an accredited residency in a medical specialty.
• Board certification in the relevant specialty, with a commitment to maintain certification throughout employment.
• A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field is preferred.
• Ability to navigate a complex matrix-reporting environment.
• A proven leader with at least 15 years of clinical practice experience, including 5 years in a leadership role.
• Demonstrated success in leading quality improvement initiatives and medical staff quality programs.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively address quality issues and foster a positive organizational culture.
• Exceptional leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to motivate others to achieve results.
• Advanced interpersonal, management, and organizational abilities.

Compensation and Work Structure

This is a hybrid role, combining part-time CMO responsibilities with a part-time clinical position based on medical specialty. The compensation for the CMO role is structured as an hourly rate ranging from $160 to $240, with expected weekly hours between 16 to 20. Pay will be determined based on experience, skills, and educational background. This position is classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and compensation may vary based on location.
