An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMS) within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health system is essential for diagnosing, surgically treating, and managing conditions, injuries, and abnormalities of the oral and maxillofacial area. The role encompasses the following responsibilities:

• Patient Care and Surgical Responsibilities

  • Assess and diagnose issues related to the mouth, jaws, face, and neck.

  • Conduct surgical procedures including:

    • Extraction of teeth, including impacted wisdom teeth.

    • Surgical treatment of maxillofacial injuries (fractures, lacerations).

    • Management of oral pathologies (tumors, cysts).

    • Pre-prosthetic surgeries for dental restoration.

  • Oversee patients with intricate medical histories and offer consultative services.

• Collaborative Care

  • Engage with other healthcare professionals (ENT, oncology, prosthodontics, anesthesiology, etc.) to deliver comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to veteran patients.

• Administrative Duties

  • Accurately document patient interactions in the VA's electronic health record (EHR).

  • Participate in departmental meetings, credentialing, and quality assurance initiatives.

  • Ensure compliance with VA policies and regulatory standards.

• Education and Mentorship

  • Provide training and oversight to dental residents, medical students, and other healthcare personnel if associated with an educational program.

  • Engage in ongoing medical/dental education to uphold surgical skills.

• Veteran-Focused Care

  • Address the specific needs of veterans, including complex medical conditions, PTSD, or trauma histories.

  • Champion veteran patient care and access to oral and maxillofacial surgical services.

• Emergency and On-Call Responsibilities

  • Respond to urgent cases involving severe infections or other critical conditions.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM
