Position Summary The Personal Attendant provides direct, hands-on care and daily living support to individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and Autism. This role is responsible for assisting participants with personal care, mobility, medication support, and daily activities while promoting independence, dignity, safety, and overall well-being in accordance with individualized care plans and regulatory requirements. Position Scope This position operates within home-based and community-based care settings and works under the direction of Program Supervisors, Care Coordinators, and clinical staff as applicable. The Personal Attendant plays a critical role in implementing individualized service plans and ensuring continuity of care across daily activities. This role requires the ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including standing, walking, bending, lifting, and assisting with participant transfers. The Personal Attendant must be able to safely lift and move participants using proper body mechanics and assistive equipment, as required. Key Responsibilities The Personal Attendant provides compassionate, person-centered support to individuals in accordance with their individualized service plans. Responsibilities include assisting with activities of daily living, personal care, mobility, meal preparation, medication assistance as authorized, community participation, and skill development while promoting independence, dignity, and individual choice. The Personal Attendant observes and reports changes in participants’ health, behavior, and well-being; maintains accurate documentation; follows applicable behavior support and safety plans; performs light housekeeping related to participant care; transports participants when authorized; participates in required training; and ensures services are provided in accordance with organizational policies and applicable regulatory requirements. Regulatory Frameworks California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) requirements Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) regulations HIPAA and privacy laws Company policies, procedures, and participant rights standards Confidentiality The Personal Attendant must maintain strict confidentiality regarding participant information, medical records, personal data, and proprietary company information. Unauthorized disclosure may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. Documentation Requirements Daily service notes and activity logs Incident and accident reports, when applicable Medication observation records (as authorized) Timesheets and scheduling records Certifications CPR and First Aid certification (required or must be obtained within designated timeframe) Additional certifications may be required based on program or participant needs Education High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Experience Prior experience as a Personal Attendant, Direct Support Professional (DSP), or caregiver preferred Experience working with individuals with IDD and Autism is a plus Technical Skills Ability to use electronic documentation systems or mobile applications Basic computer and smartphone proficiency Understanding of safe lifting and transfer techniques Languages English proficiency (verbal and written) is required. Bilingual skills are a plus. Driver License Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required for roles involving participant transport. Must meet company driving and insurance standards. Travel Requirement Local travel required between participant homes, community locations, and appointments as assigned. Flexible scheduling is required, including availability for evenings, weekends, holidays, and varying shift schedules based on participant needs.
