Summary

The purpose of the Body Technician is to perform skilled work in repairing fire apparatus bodies.


Duties and Responsibilities

• Enforce all company policies as defined in the SMEG Company Handbook
• Interact with customers, vendors and entire service staff
• Always maintain a neat and professional personal appearance, wearing appropriate logo assigned company shirts
• Clock in and out on repairs to record actual time worked on vehicle using tech app
• Review repair plans prior to teardown and understand the repair work that is necessary
• Properly document via photography all damage, before, during, and after repairs
• Maintaining excellent organizational skills utilizing parts carts, labeling, pallets, stands, etc.
• Uses various tools & equipment such as cutting guns, plasma cutters, hydraulic jacks, hammers, and pliers, pull posts, shear, and brake to repair sections of a vehicle
• Hammers out dents, dimples, and other minor body damage if possible; mixes and apply filler resins to repair dents when other methods are not feasible
• Realigns chassis and frames to repair structural damage
• Remove damaged sections of vehicles and replaces with new parts
• Perform Mechanical repairs as required
• Replaces or repairs glass and windshields as needed
• Replaces or repairs interior parts as needed
• Welds and otherwise attaches or fits parts into place
• Provide the Assistant Manager with accurate estimated labor times
• Understanding productivity goals and reviewing areas in need of improvement
• Participate in morning meetings with service staff to plan the day
• Maintain accurate, timely and legible company designed reports and paperwork
• Ensure all work has been executed correctly by inspecting vehicles after repair
• Performs other related duties as assigned
• Wear proper PPE at all times including Safety toe shoes, respirator, eye protection and hearing protection
• Maintain a clean working environment

Qualifications

The Body Technician must be able to clearly demonstrate their ability to set and reach performance goals set forth by the owner/operator.

• Excellent customer service skills, both verbal and written
• Ability to read repair estimates and work with very little supervision
• Ability to work with other repairers within collision center
• Thorough understanding of methods and procedures to repair vehicle body
• Thorough understanding of how to use tools required for the trade
• Should have excellent verbal communication skills
• Must have the ability to work under pressure
• Experience within Fire and Emergency related industry
• Must be self-motivated
• Exceptional organizational methods
• Attention to detail and the ability to provide consistent work
• Dedication to customer service and business success
• Ability to engage in and maintain positive relationships with employees, vendors and customers
• Computer skills: Must be proficient with Microsoft Outlook Email and the Tech Labor App

Education and/or Experience

• High School Diploma or GED
• Formal Training and/or Trade School Training Preferred
• 3 to 5 years of body shop experience strongly preferred
• Valid Driver's License and eligible to be covered under the Siddons Martin insurance policy
• Class B non-exempt CDL is a Plus

Training Programs and Regular Business Meetings

With appropriate notification, the Autobody Repair Technician agrees to attend and participate in all career specific seminars, training courses, industry related certification programs and internal company training and or meetings recommended or scheduled by the business owner/operator.

This includes the agreement not to use any foul or objectionable language towards any customer, vendor, co-worker or employee. To refrain from any negative comments about any customer, vendor, competitor or employee. As a Body Technician, you are expected to maintain composure with all customers, vendors and employees always and to carry out all defined duties in a professional manner.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to walk stairs and/or climb ladders. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
