Mineral Processing Laboratory Technician The primary responsibilities of a mineral processing laboratory technician are to carry out the tasks assigned by the Metallurgical Engineer, Sr. Metallurgical Technician, or the designated supervisor safely and efficiently. These tasks are varied, and you will be trained for each specific task you will be asked to perform. Essential Job Functions Sample receipt and inventory; weigh and record. Lab ID and sample labeling. Sample preparation. Crushing. Jaw crusher, roll crusher. Blending. Table roll cloth, floor roll cloth, riffle. Pug mill. Cone and quarter splitting. Riffle. Large rotary, small rotary, roll cloth. Screening. Wet screen – Sweco; wet screen – 8”; dry screen – Gilson; dry screen – Sweco. Dry screen – Ro‑Tap. Assist Sr. Metallurgical Technician or Engineer as flotation assistant. Grinding in rod mill; pressure filter samples; vacuum filter samples; decant. Titration. Maintain laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Assist with or perform routine chemical and/or metallurgical analysis. Handle various chemical reagents safely. Dispose of residues in a safe and prescribed manner. Monitor multiple assays at once. Collect and report results accurately. Assist others as requested or assigned. Perform related duties as required. Requirements / Qualifications Minimum education: HS Diploma/GED. Prior analytical laboratory, chemistry, core handling or mining experience preferred but not required. Must be able to utilize basic math skills to calculate dilution factors and solution concentrations quickly and accurately. Must have effective communication skills, as well as interpersonal, problem‑solving and basic math skills to perform routine calculations and recognize, correct and inform others when quality control is out of range. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining the highest level of quality assurance and compliance. Must be able to follow directions completely, accurately and consistently. Must have strong organizational and documentation skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel to develop and maintain spreadsheet reports and other documentation. Must be able to interact successfully with all levels of staff, clients and vendors. Must be able to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Must have reliable transportation to and from the jobsite. Required availability: primarily Monday through Friday; some evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime may be required. Able to successfully complete reference check, background check, drug screen and respirator clearance physical. Physical Demands Constant (more than 66% of time): Lifting/carrying 11‑20 lbs.; pushing/pulling 11‑20 lbs.; seeing (trades, mechanical, general), hearing, talking, repetitive motion – hands, feeling (temperature, texture, etc.), fingering (pinching, typing, etc.), grasping, standing, twisting/turning, reaching. Frequent (34% – 66% of time): Lifting/carrying 21‑50 lbs.; pushing/pulling 21‑50 lbs.; seeing (computer, reading), walking – even surfaces, balancing. Occasional (1% – 33% of time): Seeing (at night or low lighting), walking – uneven surfaces, stooping, sitting. Environment Inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. Noise: sufficient noise to require shouting in order to be heard above ambient noise level. Vibration: exposure to oscillating movements of extremities or whole body. Atmospheric conditions: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation may affect the respiratory system of the skin. Oils: air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids. Hazards: proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or chemicals.
