Instructor/Equine Educational Manager

Overview Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation (DAPER) at Stanford University supports nearly 900 student‑athletes across 36 intercollegiate teams and additional physical education, recreation, and wellness initiatives. Position Details Title: Instructor/Equine Educational Manager Location: Stanford, California, United States Employment Type: Part‑time (60% FTE), on site This role reports directly to the Executive Director and Head Coach and works within the Red Barn Student Equestrian Center. Responsibilities Instruction (10 hrs/week) Instruct students in all HORSE Classes (10, 12, and 30) Teach Equestrian Team practices and class logistics Teach community horse programs and outreach as needed Staff Development (2 hrs/week) Provide lessons and clinics to Instructors and Coaches on teaching objectives and horse training objectives, in collaboration with the Executive Director Horse Training and Management (8 hrs/week) Serve as liaison for advanced horse training and develop onboarding plans for new horses Ride and train horses, and instruct students, coaches, and instructors as required Assist Program Director, Equine Director, and General Manager in managing student and staff horse‑care responsibilities Partner with the General Manager to oversee Stablehands/Groomsmen in horse care and facility maintenance Assist with facility operations to ensure smooth daily functions, including walk‑throughs Course Content Highlights Horse 10 Emphasis on safety, unmounted work during the first 5 weeks, followed by both mounted and unmounted components in the final 3 weeks Utilizes discussion, assignments, and student participation to develop confidence in working with horses Horse 12 Focus on advanced communication, grooming, haltering, and riding skills across walk, trot, and advanced flat work Includes unmounted safety training and mounted instructional practice Horse 30: Equine Leadership Develops social‑emotional leadership, teamwork, and risk‑management skills through interaction with horses Qualifications Bachelor’s degree with equivalent education/experience or four years of relevant experience Previous teaching/instructional experience and strong organizational skills Solid understanding of stable operations and equine management Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with diverse individuals Ability to safely school horses up to a 3‑level Strong judgment, critical thinking, and minimal supervision requirements Physical Requirements Ability to lift 20 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally Working Conditions Time may involve standing, walking, lifting, twisting, turning, shoveling, climbing, throwing, and squatting Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including dust, rain, mold, and hay Daily interaction with horses Requires 24‑hour response availability seven days a week for emergencies Work Standards Demonstrate interpersonal skills with colleagues, clients, and external partners Promote a safety culture, communicate concerns, and model safe behaviors Comply with all University policies and procedures, including personnel and administrative guidelines DAPER’s Integrity This position upholds the integrity of Stanford’s intercollegiate athletics program and the reputation of the University.
