JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Speech & Language Therapist FLSA Status: Exempt Days of Work: 190 GENERAL SUMMARY Under general supervision, administers and coordinates diagnostic, therapeutic and consultative functions related to speech and language impairment; conducts screenings, provides therapy for qualified students who need speech and language services. Participates in Individual Education Plan(IEP) meetings and initiates IEPs for qualified students. Maintains Strict confidentiality concerning students and their families. Reports to the Director of Special Services. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned.) Conducts and interprets evaluations for students with special attention to receptive and expressive language skills, speech fluency, vocal and oral motor competence and articulation and auditory skills as required by law. Provides speech and language screening services. Conducts preschool speech and language evaluations as needed. Consults with parents regarding methods they can use at home to help their child with communication disorders. Assists teachers in observing, describing, and referring students for speech and language services. Administers diagnostic testing procedures to determine the extent of the student's impairment and the plan for improvement. Assists with the development of IEP goals for speech and language. Develops and administers a speech and language therapy program consistent with the needs of the students and according to the established IEP goals. Evaluates student progress in the Speech and Language program and communicates with parents and teachers. Conducts regular therapy sessions, individual and groups; prepares the goals as part of the Speech Therapy Report on each student scheduled for therapy. Develops schedules for student services, coordinating with classroom teachers. Maintains student records and attendance reporting as required by the District. Participates in completing District Special Education reports and requests for information. Accurately prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the District such as evaluation results, IEPs, progress reports, etc. Performs internal and external educational functions which may include consultation with teachers and school staff and periodic in-service presentations. Seeks the cooperation and assistance of parents through oral or written communication and/or home visits. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, District policies, and administrative regulations. Provides for his/her own professional growth through an on-going program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning. Interacts with others in a respectful and cooperative manner at all times. Willingly performs other duties as assigned or requested. JOB SPECIFICATIONS Education and Experience: South Carolina certification as a Speech Therapist; and any equivalent combination of training and experience, as allowed by State certification authorities, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of assessments and remediation of speech /language impairments; thorough knowledge of Federal, State and local guidelines related to the implementation of the speech /language program; knowledge of current educational research, especially in the field of speech pathology; understanding and knowledge of current technology in the field; thorough knowledge of confidentiality as it pertains to students and their families. Skills/Effort: Ability to provide speech therapy to students through explanation, demonstration and/or supervised practice; ability to supervise and work with students effectively; ability to assess, diagnose, and treat various speech and oral motor impairments; ability to recommend appropriate remedial action to parents; ability to communicate effectively with students, their parents, District staff, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job; ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with others. Working Conditions: Conducts duties in a school/classroom environment with little significant exposure to environmental conditions; physical demands are restricted to classroom work requiring the lifting/moving of items weighing up to 10 pounds; occasional local travel is required; occasional overnight travel is required.
