Charge Registered Nurse II - Observation Unit

Come lead with us at Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital. At Houston Methodist, the Charge Nurse position is a licensed professional Registered Nurse (RN) who, as an experienced clinician, functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. This position creates an environment for the management and delivery of safe patient care. In addition to fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a clinical nurse, the Charge Nurse is a role model and coach to department personnel and assists in developing their skills and knowledge. This role provides nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts assessments, assists with exams, maintains medical records, and mentors staff in clinical and professional practice. The Charge Nurse models compassionate communication with physicians and the interprofessional health care team, assuming leadership responsibilities at the bedside, unit, service line, and across the institution. Responsibilities include leading unit and shared governance activities, assessing unit needs related to practice and improvement opportunities, serving as a clinical resource for unit and hospital staff, and coordinating unit and hospital-wide education in partnership with management.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations section Experience Twenty‑four months of clinical nursing experience with demonstration of progressive leadership skills

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Required RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing_PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency) and BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association Preferred Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) within 4 months NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) within 4 months NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI)

Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers in a manner consistent with customer service focus and positive language principles Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills, prioritizing multiple tasks and role components Functions independently and exercises judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional healthcare team, patients, and families Uses critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act Demonstrates proficient time‑management skills Has highly developed assessment skills, contributing to policies, procedures, and protocols Knowledgeable of the Nursing Unit’s Dashboard and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores Expertise in operating the electronic medical record Maintains the level of professional contributions as defined in the Clinical Career Path program guide

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

People Essential Functions Fosters staff engagement by demonstrating active listening, acknowledging feedback, making equitable decisions, and providing rationale when appropriate; supports organizational goals and proactively offers assistance Role models inter‑professional communication and assists with staff stress management; improves departmental turnover/retention scores on the unit‑based scorecard Mentors staff using efficient communication, supports patient and family inclusion in care planning, and provides input on performance reviews Provides oversight for students, new employees, and preceptorships, identifies organizational conflict, and applies tools to resolve concerns with patients, families, physicians, and interprofessional team members Service Essential Functions Leads patient and family‑centered care standards, mentors others regarding specialty populations, audits care plans, and practices inclusively Maintains ongoing interactions with patients, families, and staff to improve patient care through leader rounding and collaborates on patient process issues with other departments Drives department service standards and activities to improve patient satisfaction scores on the unit‑based scorecard Quality/Safety Essential Functions Models standards of care outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document, improves nurse‑sensitive quality indicators and patient safety goals, and promotes a continuous improvement environment with teachable moments Coordinates nursing care throughout the shift, considering patient acuity and staff skill to meet patient needs; models regulatory and professional practice standards Facilitates seamless patient flow, ensures accurate care plans, coaches staff on documentation, collaborates with OAs and bed management, and responds proactively to rapid response or emergency codes Participates in initiatives to improve quality and safety scores, reports near misses, identifies solutions with the interprofessional team, and assists with audits Finance Essential Functions Implements strategies to achieve financial targets on the unit‑based scorecard and mentors others in documentation, reducing length of stay and optimizing efficiency Attends daily care coordination rounds to facilitate patient progression and follow‑up on identified concerns Provides input on unit resource utilization, oversees shift‑by‑shift allocation of staff and supplies, and contributes to patient throughput Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Fosters identification and implementation of innovative solutions for practice changes, leads unit projects, incorporates evidence‑based practices, and supports change initiatives Expands individual nursing knowledge and coaches staff to grow in skills, and develops educational resources to improve quality and professional practice Supplemental Requirements Work Attire Uniform: Yes Scrubs: Yes Business professional: No Other (department approved): No On‑Call Employees may be required to be on‑call during emergencies (e.g., disaster, severe weather events) On Call: Yes Travel Travel specifications may vary by department May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area: Yes May require travel outside Houston Metropolitan area: No Houston Methodist is an Equal Opportunity Employer. #J-18808-Ljbffr Houston Methodist
