DISTRICT NURSE
SUPERVISION
Under the supervision of the Administrator, Educational Services, he/she shall be responsible for:
Coordinating the District-wide Health Services program. Participates in policy development and supervises the implementation of policies and regulations related to student and staff health.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Interprets the school health program, including legislation relating to health, to school employees and the community.
2. Plans and implements inservice programs for office managers and office assistants.
3. Plans and directs the program for prevention and control of communicable disease and head lice.
4. Implements state health mandates relating to the students and school employees.
5. Coordinates joint educational projects with local hospital personnel
6. Prepares and coordinates annual reports of hearing, vision, Child Health and Disability Prevention Program, scoliosis, and immunization screening as mandated by the State.
7. Serves as a consultant to administrators in the area of student health needs.
8. Serves as liaison between the parent and the school in health matters.
9. Serves as a liaison between the District and the medical community.
10. Serves as a consultant to staff in suspected child abuse cases.
11. Provides health assessment of individual pupils and makes referrals to the medical community.
12. Assists in preparation of the Health Services budget.
13. Coordinates appraisals, inspections and surveys of pupils including vision and hearing screening to identify health needs and defects.
14. Provide follow-up service related to health needs and assist parents to utilize community resources as needed.
15. Serve as a health education resource person for staff, pupils and parents with inservices, workshops, health meetings and classroom demonstrations.
16. Serve as needed on Child Study Team.
17. Consult with teachers, counselors and parents regarding students with health problems/needs, making home visits as needed.
18. Keep health records for each student and assist in providing first aid services during the lunch period when at school sites.
19. Establish and maintain a viable, preventive health education program.
20. Inform or supervise the informing of parents regarding screening results which require further assessments through written messages and/or home visits. If needed, assist the family to obtain the necessary medical treatments for the student.
21. Document the health/nursing services provided by the nurse to students in the student health records.
22. Refer all identified students who need further diagnosis and treatment for a health related condition.
23. Complete health and developmental assessments/histories on students being considered for special education placement per request of school staff.
24. Provide annual training and monthly supervision of staff performing specialized medical treatments, pursuant to Section 49423.5 of the Business and Professional Code, and per Cucamonga School District medical policies and procedures.
25. Be available to school staff by phone for consultation as appropriate.
26. Monitors and supervises the distribution of doctor prescribed medications.
27. Provides as needed specialized medical services to students/staff which may include but not be limited to: potential serious injuries, doctor ordered medical services, assessment of the need for emergency care.
28. Conducts required annual training for staff on health related issues to include, but not limited to: blood borne pathogens and Child Protective Services reporting.
29. Set up and organize the health offices at each site.
30. Monitor student health needs and provide notifications and support to staff as necessary.
31. Perform applicable Health Services as specified in the Education Code.
32. Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Credential/Licenses: Valid California State Registered Nurse License. Enrollment in a college program leading to a California credential authorizing services as a school nurse; valid certificate of audiometry. Valid California State Motor Vehicles Operator=s License and have the availability of an automobile.
Education: Bachelor=s degree
Experience: A minimum of five years of successful nursing experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Credential: Valid California credential authorizing service as a school nurse; valid certificate of Audiometry; administrative or supervisory credential
Education: Master=s degree preferred
Experience: Three years of experience in school nursing.
