Job Title Entry and Lateral Community Police Officers Overview The Portland Police Bureau is seeking individuals for Entry and Lateral Community Police Officer positions. Applicants will undergo a multi‑phase recruitment process that includes written exams, physical tests, background investigations, and interviews. The role is entry‑level for new officers and lateral for experienced sworn personnel from other agencies. Key Responsibilities Maintain public safety and enforce laws throughout the City of Portland. Respond to emergency calls, incidents, and standard patrol duties. Conduct investigations, evidence collection, and crime scene processing. Prepare reports and testify in court as required. Engage with community members and provide public education on safety and law enforcement. Work collaboratively with team members, other agencies, and emergency services. Applicant Eligibility – Entry Minimum age of 20.5 years. High School Diploma or GED. U.S. citizenship or legal immigrant status within 18 months of hire. Valid driver’s license in current state of residence. Must meet physical and medical requirements for police work. Applicant Eligibility – Lateral At least three (3) years of continuous sworn service with a recognized police agency. Employment with that agency within the last two (2) years. Military police, federal law enforcement, corrections, or parole/ probation personnel do not qualify. Disqualifying Factors Offensive tattoos or body art not considered case‑by‑case. Vision worse than corrected 20/30. Use of marijuana in the last 12 months. Felony convictions or domestic violence convictions. Dishonorable military discharge. More than three (3) moving‑traffic convictions in the past three years. Other eliminating factors listed on the official website. Benefits Paid wellness time: 1 hour per shift.
