Job Description and Duties STATE PARK INTERPRETER I – NORTH COAST REDWOODS DISTRICT / INTERPRETATION AND EDUCATION / RICHARDSON GROVE STATE PARK The reporting location for this position is Richardson Grove State Park, located at 1600 US Hwy 101 in Garberville, CA. Under the direction of the State Park Interpreter III, the State Park Interpreter I is responsible for building and sustaining park partnerships and community engagement public programming activities necessary to create high-quality and relevant visitor interpretive experiences to connect visitors and community members with our parks and resources. Researching, planning, developing, presenting and supporting innovative interpretive programs at various park units within North Coast Redwoods District (NCRD) and local communities. Engages in personal and non-personal interpretive services and community outreach events with a focus on community building, engagement, and recruitment. The position works closely with parks partners, staff and volunteers, Tribal partners, community groups, local schools and educational institutions, park co‑operative associations, and other local organizations. The role has responsibilities in Richardson Grove State Park (RGSP), as well as in parks throughout the Eel River Sector, including, but not limited to Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Benbow SRA, and Standish Hickey SRA. It also periodically works in nearby state parks throughout the North Coast Redwoods District (NCRD). Present campfire programs, Junior Ranger activities, guided walks, roving interpretation, and deliver interpretive programs for local school groups and community members. In addition to traditional interpretation, the State Park Interpreter I develops high-quality interpretive media including signs, exhibits, brochures, newsletters, and videos. Supports Eel River Sector social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and elsewhere, and coordinates with NCRD personnel to publish posts across District platforms. Will deliver distance‑learning programs through the Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students (PORTS) program, as well as live‑streamed programs over social media accounts. The position serves as lead to volunteers and seasonal interpretive staff across visitor centers, and will develop, coordinate and deliver special events. Requirements: Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license, completion of a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment, and not telework eligible. The incumbent should have a familiarity with natural and cultural resources in Northern California, and possess a strong background in interpretive program development and delivery, knowledge of digital graphic design and social media, experience working with partners to pursue common goals, and ability to communicate with diverse audiences. Working Conditions Requires a combination of field environment and office setting. Daily and frequent use of state‑issued computer and a variety of office software applications at a workstation. Sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time (office/vehicle). Work environment may have exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, conditions, hours, elevations, dirt, dust, and/or outdoor noises. Walking or hiking into remote areas of parks with a wide range of terrain. Special Requirements Valid California Driver’s License (Class C) with driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions provided on the application.
